I have a somewhat fuzzy concept of what these exactly mean, but the trouble i am having is that when I am analyzing a certain KW with adwords tool (usually low competition, and low search volume) the results are completely different when i actually go search for them in google. the kw tool told me the the kw i was researching have very low competition for exact match, but when I went to go check for it in google it showed that it had 740,000 results. can anyone explain?

Likely the exact match terms exist somewhere in the website but might not be relevant to the site as a whole, so the vast majority won't be competition for you.

Ok I see, just wanted to make sure before investing time into a new keyword.

Since the KW tool was designed for advertisers and not for SEO when it says competition it is referring to ad competition meaning that there are a lot (or not a lot) of other ads competing for the same term in adwords.

      Exactly.

To check SEO competition. Use Market Samurai or the SEO Quake plugin (for your browser) to check backlink profiles.

Also check if the top ten results are optimized for that keyword, or if they are there "by luck".

First, the number of results has no bearing on competition. The phrase "what do you do" has 3.5 BILLION results, yet you could rank on Page 1 pretty easily.

Second, when you do a search without any qualifiers (quotes, etc.) you're always seeing the results of a Broad match search.

As such, almost every page that includes that phrase, either as-is, or those words within a sentence, will be included in the 'Results' number.

Your actual competition is always - and only - those currently on Page 1. In order to rank on Page, you have to displace someone already there.
