Reckon Ya Dont Need Backlinks? Check This Out Then

I mentioned this a year or two back but it continues to astound me. Well, not really because now I understand the importance of backlinks and how they can put you on top.

something

into google. The #1 site is something DOT com.

The index page is a work of art. You will see what I mean when you go there.

How does this site get to be #1 and has been for years?
Shiploads of backlinks. Going to Yahoo explorer tell us the main page has 26,657 backlinks going to the index page and over 29K to the whole site.

(Which tells me there a heaps of wierd people out there lol)

Majority of the pages I can see are pictures of people on stage doing various things and of his web stats. He is getting over 40K visitors a month (and not an affilite link in site) I couldnt find a word of text on his site.

To each his own I say but I wanted to highlight the importance of backlinks.

      That Index page is funny...

      I've seen a site (don't have a link) a while back that had a single image ranking #2 in Google. All it had was an image with alt-text.

    I think this also proves that on-page text dilutes a page as far as SERP ranking.

    Have you ever noticed how a Wordpress site will start ranking on an EMD, & If you let it sit it tends to hold the rank without any content.

    I did this a while back, I didn't have the time to work on the content but I wanted to get the domain established in the SERPs so it would be ready when I had the content, the site held it's own with a fresh WP install & a couple hundred backlinks from one of my other domains.

    Looking at this site something[dot]com how the heck do they move traffic from the Index page, it has no links to internal pages. Isn't that just a waste of ranking the Index page #1 in the SERPs?

    It also sounds like a viral site. I'm sure google has a pretty good idea what it is about based on other data like click stream, link text, etc.
