Default How do I move my website up in google

This thread screams "noob" I know, but any help would be appreciated. I am not the greatest at seo, sometimes I manage to rank, other times I dont... but I have just discovered that one of my websites is on page number 2 for my keyword. So my question is this...what do I need to do to move it up to page one..?

I know about backlinking - but should I get even more links pointing from other sites to mine?
If so...what kind of sites? article sites? or is there another way... thats what I do mainly.

I have my keyword in the title, domain name, and in the meta and h1 tags

I have submitted it to the main social bookmarking sites

I have written a number of articles and submitted the same article to the main article directories..

I used my keyword in the anchor text from my articles to my main website, and used the keyword as anchor text on my main website

I have also used latent semantic indexing for the content on the website..

I update my sites regularly

is there anything else? Sometimes I am so scared of touching my content once I get it ranked in case I do something wrong and google decides to not show it at all for my chosen keywords...

If you have any advice it would be greatly appreciated, because i have a lot of content out there (quality content) but I dont really get that much traffic, and therefore very little profit (I maybe make 200 - 300 a month if I am lucky)

It sounds like you are doing a lot of the right things there. Have you submitted your RSS feed to some(or a lot) of the online agreggators? Have you submitted a press release about your site to some of the many online press release sites? Do you comment on related blogs in your niche with a link back to your site?

You're on page 2, so it would be extremely beneficial to look at the sites/pages on page 1 and try to determine exactly why they are there. Do they have more backlinks? Do they have better backlinks? Do they have better on page SEO? Is the main keyword you are targeting in their domain name? All things to consider. Like I said though, it sounds like you are doing a lot of the right things. If you can ramp it up a bit, there should be no reason why you can't get onto that front page

Thanks for the tips, sorry I didnt realize i had placed it in the wrong section. I think its been done for me Press releases... I never even thought of that..i think I have a lot to learn and need to conduct more research on how other sites get that top ranking. Blog commenting is something I dont know much about either...

Here's a thread I made around a year ago, I still use most of the same techniques - maybe it can be some help

Easy.

I bet that a single blast of 100 quality do-follow social bookmarks + a drip feed profile link blast to those bookmarks once per week would put your website on page one.

edit: search my threads there's one (case study) about social bookmarking.

Could you explain what a profile link is?

You are doing almost everything you need to do. In my short time doing this, I have found out that the most important thing that will help you rank higher on Google is backlinks. Forget quality content and all the rest. Keep building backlinks and you will get there.

However, once you get there and start receiving traffic, not having quality and useful content will come to bite you. You may get thousands of visitors, but most of them will never return.

So, if you wanna rank higher and drive traffic to your site and keep them coming back over and over again, create quality content and build backlinks as much as you can.

Use SEOBOOK tool to dig into the backlinks that your page 1's competitors have built. Look for the high quality backlinks and build the same as what your competitors have built...This is always a surefire way to boost the rankings.
