Question about first page of results

I have been studying SEO lately and I think I have the basics down, but sometimes I get so thrown off with my research that i feel like I dont know anything at all.

For example, why is it that some websites that are completely new and have about three articles on it and a couple of pr0 backlinks rank at number 1 for a targeted keyword, when other sites beneath it have such a stronger link network and content?

I dont understand it. I always hesitate because I am not sure if i have a "good" keyword or not, because my biggest fear is wasting so much time on a quality site only to have it never seen by anyone..

so how do these guys do it? I use market samuarai for a lot of indepth competion analysis, and I like it, but I still dont understand why some sites seem to rank higher than others..

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Could you give us some examples?

Google has been refining their aglorithm for years now and websites are mostly ranked for backlinks, content (which contains the keyword) and the domain name (which also contains the keyword).

Squeedo pages (for example) are ranking fairly well and quick because they meet a lot of the requirements

Well here is a snap shot of some research using market samaurai. As you can see the first result only has a page rank of 1 with a couple of backlinks. It has an optimized url with all the on page seo stuff too. Sometimes I find keywords with virtually no competition and spend a lot of time optimizing a website and building a lot of backlinks and still dont manage to rank..

Google places a lots of emphasis on the age of a domain so a site that has been sitting around doing not a lot for years could well rank above a newer site with more links. The quality and relevance of the backlinks to a site may well also be factor. I have also read that sites that have a few really long (< 1000 words) highly relevant and informative articles on them that have lots of good LSI words related to the main domain keyword are also favoured over shorter content type sites.
