    Start by reading the paper that started it all: The Anatomy of a Search Engine

    Check out all the white papers - Hilltop Algo, TrustRank, Automatic Resource Compilation, Topic Sensitive PageRank etc.

    Next, look over Google's history of algo updates and read what was said about them at the time and now. Here's a list of the updates: Page Rank Update or Export List History - PageRank - PR

    Connect the ideas between the papers and action that Google took with their algorithm/infrastructure updates. This is the best way to gain an elevated, "expert" understanding of Google and their search algorithm.

      Two words: Content and Conversion. Both in themselves pretty big subjects but are well worth looking at keenly. Whatever the courses and gurus say it really does boil down to these two.

      Yes, there is also backlinking - but given the right tools anyone can do this reasonably successfully these days

        The first thing you need to do is to get as much info on SEO as possible. With me I started with Brad Callen's "SEO Made Easy". From that point I built my own website and applied the strategies that I learn to rank my first site on the front page and started earning a decent income.

        I guess what I am trying to say is, to become a great SEO expert, you have to be able to practice what you are intending on preaching...

    To become an expert you have to love it. Without the love you won't keep up the energy to become an expert.

    It takes a lot of experience and testing to find out what works, what doesn't work, how different niches and competition effect efforts.

    You need to know about natural link building methods, positives/negatives about multiple proxy use, automated software, how to use them, what Google likes, what it doesn't.

    Differences in algorithms among different search engines... etc.

    So much great info is in this forum. Take a read.

    Hi buddy, No one is become expert in SEO . Because each and every day new technique and technology comes so no one is expert. With the help of reading article on SEO you become good SEO.

    Yes, That right, More knowledge and more experience are required to be a seo expert. You can gain more knowledge but you can not gain experience. So read online seo tutorial and take a time for improve yourself.

    I think to become seo expert one need to have

    # Good analytical skill to grasp the current trend of end user's keyword search.
    # Knowledge of Google algorithm, rules & regulation.
    # If one have good programming knowledge then it will be essential.
    # Good content writing skills.
