Interesting call today from an executive producer for some TV show

Well, the phone rang, thought it was another inquiry for web design, turns out its an executive producer from some latino tv show. All in all he was wanting to work out a deal for advertisement in exchange for web design and basically I told him I'm not really interested. I have a hard enough time understanding half my clients, I don't want to have to speak broken spanish. LOL.

Anyway, what is really interesting, he brought up that web design is dying and SEO is taking over. Well, web design will always be needed, so whatever, but he's right, the SEO market is increasing.

THEN, he went on saying that before the year is over, SEO will be dead. I think I have heard that 100 times already since the year 2000. What he brought up is that he has a "connection" at google that told him that organic seo will be useless. He said that they will be charging web masters money to even appear in the searches.

So, I found that interesting. I don't believe him at all and I think it is a bunch of fluff and maybe he's on drugs. BUT!!!!

What if it were true? What if google started charging a fee in order to crawl sites? Would that effect you in any way? I know many of you don't have other streams of traffic, so you would likely pay the fee, but then how does it effect your off page SEO work? I know its crazy, but it reminds me to make sure I have other sources of traffic other than just Google.

If it was true, a new search engine like Blekko, but easier to use, would come in and take over. Bing's share would skyrocket, and G's would plummet.

Agreed, Google didn't become the #1 web site and search engine in the world with a "pay to crawl" business model. Why change now? Too popular?

Google charging to get a website crawled would result in unhappy searchers. And unhappy searchers will go elsewhere. So who would be left to click on the ads (PPC) which is where they make their money?

Also, the amount of money they could get by charging sites to get crawled would almost certainly pale compared to their advertising revenues.

I can remember searchers actually spending a great deal of time on oBay. Look what happened there. PayPal is now projected to be the major portion of eBay inc. in a few years.

Didn't you know? Everybody with a big mouth has some kind of connection to Google. lol

I wouldn't take a word he's said with a grain of salt. SEO will only get bigger and bigger, ignore morons like that.

Depends on who runs Google. If the "guy" is a control freak, yes, they'll screw it up. If "the guy" is a libertarian and believes in free markets, they'll get out of the way and let the people (end users) decide what's the best content. In many ways, the problems we see in society travel their way down to even to the way a search engine is ran. If you have a tyrant running a search engine, who wants to control everything and get rid of every danger, problem or potential threat - they'll eventually destroy themselves and their brand as everyone moves over to the "easier to use" and less "censored" search.

Up until now, Google has been pretty damn free market. I just don't know how long that's gonna last.

I would see a mass migration to Yahoo and Bing once Google's search results were cut by 95%. Seriously, isn't $24 Billion in revenue a good enough business model as is?

Yeah, I agree... he also claimed the others would follow suit, but then someone else would pop up for a huge share of the market.

Possibly... and I know people get like that, but I honestly think he believes it himself.

Well, yeah, you would think so. No matter what kind of business it is though, and no matter how much money they make I would think they're going to want to make more and always come up with ideas to do that.

I don't believe this guy, and he didn't have me fooled for a second, but it got me thinking. I know many many people on here depend on google for their traffic. Even though it is major BS, I think its something good to reflect on in preparation of something ever happening, to diversify traffic. Next algo change everyone could lose their spots and a majority of traffic. So... I'm viewing the call as not a total waste of time, but something that really sets in. I always see threads about people losing a top spot on Google and they're freaking out since that was how they were making money.

I believe the most fitting relationship is:

Dark Helmet: "I am your brothers' sister's uncles' cousins' former room mate."
Lone Star: "What does that make us?"
        Dark Helmet: "Absolute nothing!"

This reminds me of all the noise a year or two ago about how Facebook was going to start charging for membership. We all know what happened with that.

This guy is a con artist, IMO. No real TV producer who is actually working with a show or network would trade work. Real business owners pay for the work with a check or a credit card because a payment is tax deductable and documentable, but how are you going to explain to a tax auditor the value of a trade? I've been running a service business for 14 years, and every time someone wanted to trade, it was because they were broke, and every time someone wanted to trade and said they were big, rich and important, they were a con artist.

I sort of look at people theories on SEO like seduction.

Every guy has a theory, and there are plenty of different systems that work. What there is not though, is a definitive manual.
