Who do you think is attacking Market Samurai?

I just got this email from them, as I'm sure you all did as well:

As a Market Samurai user you may have noticed problems returning
results with Market Samurai.
In particular, updating your Rank Tracker data, and also analysing
SEOC figures in your Keyword Research module may be failing.
In the last few weeks our servers have been under attack from
unknown sources, causing widespread problems for our users.
Rest assured that we're (literally) working around the clock to
resolve the issue.
===============================
IMPORTANT: What you need to do
===============================
As part of addressing this issue, we've issued a critical update to
Market Samurai.
This is a MANDATORY update, and all older versions of Market
Samurai will not continue to work any longer.
Updating is easy: Simply fire up Market Samurai, and say "Yes" when
the "Update Available" window pops up.
For full details about the situation, please head to our blog.

Do you think competition is doing this? Why on earth would anyone else attack their network? Seems like an odd target.
None the less, time to upgrade fellas. If you didn't get the email, now you know...Also, always have a good anti-virus protecting you.

regards

Maybe they released this update to get rid of the cracked copies of the software which were sold and offered for free on some sites. They said that the previous versions won't work anymore and everyone has to buy the newest update. If this is really the case IMO it's a very creative move and they really deserve the outcome because they done a great job creating MS.This is one possibility.

Maybe it's just an angry buyer who knows a little bit about how to do these attacks or someone who is envy on their success with the software.

I don't really know what going on i'm just sharing my opinion.

I'd say this is to squash all those people using pirated versions and burdening the servers. Sounds like a necessary move.

Agreed. Just search around any of the "other" IM forums and you'll find copies all over the place. Hopefully this changes that.

Yeah, looks like they (rather stupidly) hadn't configured their proxy-servers to require authentication - which left them open for anyone to use, if they could establish what their IP addresses were.

    Fixed, anyway.

To be honest, I'm more concerned about the fact that they've moved from Yahoo Site Explorer to "MajesticSEO" for backlink data. Not only is its backlink-count data-gathering quite rudimentary in comparison to Yahoo's (understandable - Yahoo are a huge search-engine!), they require payment for the generation of "backlink reports" in order to give you a list of backlinks!!

So now one has to manually go to Yahoo Site Explorer for this information, which is a real pain in the ass.

I understand that Site Explorer is being phased out, but why not switch over to something else once that happens, rather than immediately?

    Sucks.

Ouch, so we must pay MajesticSEO for the "backlink reports" now? OMG. Can anyone confirm this?

        Yes.

When you click one of the backlinks data cells in the SEO Competition or Rank Tracker modules, it now takes you to Majestic SEO's site instead of Yahoo Site Explorer.

All they provide is some basic backlink count data; they don't display the URLs of the pages on which those backlinks reside.

To get that information, you either need to pay for one of Majestic's packages (monthly subscription - very expensive) or else ditch them altogether and head for Yahoo Site Explorer.

But if you're using Yahoo Site Explorer, this makes the "backlink count" data in Market Samurai itself pretty meaningless, since that's the count provided by Majestic SEO. Better to ignore the count figure in Market Samurai altogether.

This makes Market Samurai all but worthless now, for anything involving backlink competition research.

And all this is somewhat unnecessary, too, since Yahoo Site Explorer is still online and functioning. Surely they could've continued to use YSE until they'd taken it offline (whenever that may be). This is all very backwards and premature.

You're right, Dave - it is annoying. But they have committed to implementing an option to choose which backlink data source to use (not sure if they've done that yet, though? I haven't used it for a few days).

As for what people can do once Yahoo have finished phasing out Site Explorer: I really and honestly have no idea.

But everyone else who does SEO competition research (a lot of people!) will be in the same boat, so I've no doubt some solution will be worked out in due course. We can only hope, anyway. :p

Just dusted off TraficTravisPro have not used it in ages but honestly i can't use MS anymore until it's back to normal, it just sucks at the moment.
Opened MS this morning another update was installed and...
Takes longer than ever or just hangs in the middle of a project and to top it off results are way off.
Without accurate keyword and search data it's like working with blinds on, that's why it's back to trafic trav, not my first choice but better than nothing.

    Cheers

Market Samurai was a great tool. I just tried to process only a couple hundred keywords and it took over 1.5 hours for the analysis. I hope they get this fixed soon. It's been a couple of weeks but I will be forced to find an alternative.

      Maybe back to wordtracker.

MS was once great - but now, apart from all the reliability problems, backlink data seems to have taken on wildly new proportions - making previously straightforward-seeming SEO campaigns look like climbing Mt. Everest twice - without oxygen.

    Not impressed at all.

MS is updated to the newest version, but its simply not getting ALL data, always hanging at the end and not finishing.

Yesterday i also got contradicting results, said i am #1 for a keyword and double checked but i am certainly not for that one keyword.

It's a little flaky at the moment.

Well I am sure your time is as valuable as mine and I don't have much of it to wait for what seems like a fairly large fix.

Can't seem to get SeoQuake to respond much today either.

I heard a few mentions of Traffic Travis. Are there any other recommendations for keyword research programs that can replace Market Samurai?

I thought Jack Duncan created a tool that is sold here on the WF but I can only attest to MS as it is the only paid tool I've used.

Yep. I said it in another thread. Majestic has been causing my MS data to be skewed since they switched. Apparently they're gonna update with an option to choose between yahoo and majestic, until Yahoo is phased out.

The worst thing I've seen from MS is them closing down their forums in the middle of this crisis. That was the biggest PR mistake I've seen in eons. I know those guys and know it wasn't done maliciously, but still, whoever decided that they should cut off the voices of their loyal customers at a time when they need questions answered, well it I found that just about the dumbest thing I'd seen since Charlie Sheen on the Today show.

I've recommended MS since it came out, and now all the folks on my list have been mailing me wondering what the hell is happening with the software. My data is no longer accurate, and it's been like that for a while now. Getting so I really can't trust the results MS brings up.

This is a damned shame. MS is the gold standard man. It's the cat's frikin meow for research and analysis. I truly hope they can get this all ironed out in the next while.

As for the hijackers? Who knows, but if you ask me it's a bit like DireStraits said - obviously they failed to implement authentication for their servers and that is one big a$$ whopping oversight on their part.

For anyone interested, the ability to select between Majestic and Yahoo Site Explorer as the backlink data source seems now to have been implemented inside Market Samurai; so we should be good to go for keyword research again - at least until YSE is discontinued.

Yep. Try Market Samurai again; because as I said in my previous post, the issues discussed here have, for the most part, been corrected (bar the occasional hanging of the Rank Tracker module when running an update).

It's usable now, anyway—at least until Yahoo actually revokes their Site Explorer tool ... but when that happens, most of the other keyword tools out there will be in dire straits, too, because they nearly all pull their backlinks data from it and aren't really any viable alternatives that are up to par.
