Domain Name Help Needed

I'm working with a client who has a website with good search results in his niche. We are building a new site using wordpress and a different hosting account under the same domain name but using .NET instead of .COM.

What is the best way to have the .COM site transfer to the new .NET site without the risk of losing the current search results? Will a 301 redirect cause an issue? If we just transfer the domain and park it will that cause the .COM to loose it's placement?

Any thoughts, recommendations, experience here is welcome.

Thank you in advance,

Brian

Why would you change from .net to .com if you have a good domain name and you are getting traffic you should keep the .com and just make the other site with .net and make it link to your .com site as if it where a home page and make the .net an extra help in getting more people to your site.

The .COM site is getting good traffic but poor conversion - the site it not well designed.

Is there a way to have the .COM domain become the main domain for the new site? How do you do that?

Or are you suggesting that when the new site at .NET is ready, to cut the .COM site in size and include a few anchor text as well as image links to the new site?

Thank you for the reply and sorry for you having to explain things SLOOOWLY to me.

I don't see why you couldn't put a redirect on the .com when the .net is finished. Obviously from this point out all the new SEO work you do like bookmarks ect will point to the new .net.

Other then that besides totally revamping the .com so that it converts better I don't know of another way besides the redirect that you could use to still get the traffic.

If you can revamp the .com you might want to turn it into a lead capture page. Lists are golden. That way you could mail them out and send them to the .net while building a list at the same time.

I really like the lead page idea - we'll see if the client is interested. Thanks!

If you already have the .com extention, I would simply revamp the .com rather than make a .net site for the same thing. If you want a blog on the site, just add a blog to the existing website and work on the .com to make it what you want it to be.

Cindy - I probably wasn't clear. We are building the new site on a separate hosting account (not willing to work with old hosting company because they suck) and I don't know how to get the old .COM domain to show the new site when it's ready without losing the SERPS. Do you know who we do that? Can I just transfer the old .COM domain when we're ready to the new hosting account and make it the main domain for the new site?

      Thanks,

I would not redirect the .com well i guess you could but not if you wanted to maintains its traffic
Google HATES redirects, and sees them as spammy/scammy and does not like to rank them

unless I am incorrect on that
