White Hat v Black Hat SEO

Hello ,
By now most people have heard the phrase "white hat" and "black hat" SEO thrown around when talking to an SEO company. Both of these techniques will get you better rankings; however there is only one that will get your website banned. That would be black hat SEO.
White hat SEO means that means that the webmaster or SEO tech is not trying to trick the search engines. It means playing by the rules. When your site is optimized using white hat SEO methods then it is more beneficial to web surfers, search engines and webmasters.
Now on the other hand black hat SEO improves rankings in ways that are disapproved of by the search engines and can involve deception. Some of these methods include cloaking, doorway pages, hidden text, link farms, and keyword stuffing. The search engines have made it clear that they will penalize your site if they detect any black hat SEO techniques being used.

If you'd like to go for long time, WhiteHat. Short time -> BlackHat. That's just my opinion, and it's come from my experience...

Thanks for the comments guys, but I think you guys are missing the point of the post here.

I was trying to get the opinions of people on whether the above mentioned services/methods are slowly becoming considered "less" white hat by Google.

To answer your question, yes. As Google continues to develop the technology to do locate them, more sites using any automated techniques to get higher rankings on Google's SERP will be banned.

It's not worth trying to stay one step ahead of Google.

And, as an avid internet user for reading and research, I am happy that Google is stepping up its quality control. When I do a search, I want relevant results. I have been finding that less and less.

As mentioned by the OP, Google wants to give pure quality. So, sites ranking high by the 'people's choice' is what Google will reward.

Always bet on black...wait, no that guy landed in jail for tax fraud.

White hat all the way. Good content, good ideas that get traction from users or businesses. Good ideas or content that gets noticed by local news sites etc.

It's time to clean up the internet of spun articles and poorly written content.

If we let it go the way it has been, everything on the internet will eventually be spun again, and basically dumbing down readers--although in some cases that wouldn't be too hard.

I'm all for setting a decent standard and let unique content be the yardstick.

I think the question on a few people's minds are where exactly is the line between the two?

So what are your opinions on link building services that are automated such as 3waylinks, The Link Juicer etc, and article sites that are mainly built up by submissions from automated article submitters.

While I have never really thought of these as Black Hat as such, is this the kind of thing Google are trying to phase out?

At the end of the day, Google is just trying to organize the internet to be the best it can be. Giving people pure quality.

Article sites which are built for automatic submissions will never get affected with any Algorithm changes. That method is never meant as Black hat SEO, it is just submission automation to article sites unless your articles are unique or in other they are already rewritteb

Ok, I realize now that the title of my post was wrong here. I'm not debating if you should use white hat or black hat (I see a number of people have left their opinions), I am trying to discuss whether link building services will be considered black hat by google and get your site banned. - What are the chances of people reading this post before leaving their view on black hat v white hat again

  Don't know about link building services being considered black hat exactly, but I do think that as Google improves and refines then any such "non-personal" links will be devalued by google.
  
  Shouldn't think it will get your site banned, but if you're below 200 sites with natural human built links you may as well be.
  
  We know that in the long term that's what Google is aiming for, why fight it?

White hat is more expensive and will take longer, thats why people chose blackhat and yes google tries to eliminate black hat but it will take a while

In short and to sum it all up in the shortest description,

WhiteHat SEO = Slow, manual, long term, gets better with every Google changes, less chances of getting banned/deindexed in Google
(their links are usually lesser, think of hundreds, for example)

BlueFart SEO = "Fast" (in terms of building links), automated (software, more like spam/blast if used incorrectly), very likely to suffer from every Google algorithm change, just look at ArticleMarketingRobot which has a PR0 despite thousands and thousands of links!
(these links are usually in the thousands due to the spamming nature of BlueFart SEO)

It all depends on the niche, and how mature that section of the index is, but you need to understand what the actual definition is.

Bottom line if you've been around for the last 10 years and ponied up the 3K for one of fantos good old cloaking solutions you at least know how real black hat strategies work.

And for the record, yes they work, they make an absolute ton of money and they almost never will be spoken about or exposed until they have been used and abused...

Keyword stuffing.

Hidden or invisible unrelated text.

Meta tag stuffing.

Link spam

Davison defines link spam (which he calls "nepotistic links")

Link farms.

"Sybil attack".

Spam blogs.

Page hijacking.

Buying expired domains.

Using world-writable pages

Spam in blogs.

Comment spam.

Wiki spam.

Referrer log spamming.

Other types of spamdexing

Mirror web sites.

URL redirection.

I bet everyone here is using black hat SEO. Backlinks should be made naturally, no profiles, no directories, etc.

Only your visitors should backlink your page, everything else is against the Googles TOS so it's kinda black hat SEO

Neither black hat nor whitehat, can guarantee risk-free results in the SERPs. State what you want but that's a fact you won't find reputable SEOs arguing.

A large part of any SEO strategy, whitehat or black hat, is about risk-management. Its all about knowing what the risks are and putting in solid contingencies to manage and control that risk.

Google is free to change its policies, rules and algorithms at any time and the "whitehat" techniques that were acceptable and risk free are suddenly made riskier and unacceptable to many causing established online businesses, who conformed to Google's TOS, to fold over night.

Put simply, whitehat is just as risky as black hat.

The convoluted debate that black hat is risky and whitehat is safe is ludicrous to the extreme. There is no guarantee by Google that whitehat SEO will provide you good rankings. Like there is no guarantee that if you have good rankings, Google will ensure that you enjoy ranking consistency after an update.

Ethical or whitehat behavior only makes sense amongst equals. So, as an online business, are you really an equal to Google? No, you're not - the odds are stacked solidly against you.

You guys obviously can't follow directions LOL, the OP stated what the purpose of this thread was and then restated it and you guys still go on and on. Geez, read the thread people.

I personally think that automatic submission sites will not ever do damage to a website because if it did, everyone would just spam competitor's websites.

I think where the problem is when the niche site does not have proper on page SEO, has too many ads (meaning it's only looking to make money, not provide content) and when the on page content is not updated frequently enough, and with unique, quality content, that is when the website will get controlled.

Once again, if Google starts banning sites for automatic submission marketing then everyone will spam the competition. The only thing that competition cannot change is their competitor's content and on page SEO so i think Google is going to keep updating their algorithm to check websites for on page quality. They are going to have to figure out a way to scan a website and determine if it is good information.

I'm not expert, but that seems like it makes the most sense to me.
