Backlinks - The ultimate SECRET *MUST KNOW*

Just kidding... But go ahead, you might actually learn that there's no secret, just using your noggin will do.

A post I made on someone's blog. Figured it was so long it might count as a good rant / lesson.

I'm not a pro SEO'er. And I don't even attest to know what I'm saying is 100% correct, but the logic behind it sounds like it should be how it works.

Usually a lurker but this is something I've been hammering people with for ages.

As you know, the most influential and accurate way to rank a site is based on backlinks (relevant backlinks). Unfortunately that would allow the best spammer to win, so Google brought in over 200 parameters in its algorithm to help weigh up each page and then rank them based on the results.

These parameter checks include h1 tags, descriptions, use of relevant keywords, keyword density, keyword in URL, time user spends on your website, the amount of times someone clicks your site on the rankings and many more....

One very good aspect of Googles Algorithm is Pagerank, which helps Google really decide what pages rank above others. For example, there are two sites in the same niche, and just for our sake, lets say they are optimized to the point where they are equal in almost every way.

There is just one difference, Blog A only manage to acquire backlinks from distributing Articles to Article Directories and Bookmarking, whilst Blog B was able to have his content syndicated on a PR 5 page.

Based on this, Blog B would beat out Blog A due to the fact that Blog A only has PR 0 non-relevant backlinks. People seem to assume that when you build these links, your page is piggy backing off of the PR of the main domain name, when infact it really isn't.

Which in this case means that getting a backlink from a high PR page is far more valuable than all these submissions. Hence why getting your content syndicated on quality sites / pages is your ultimate goal. This is only attainable if you spend time writing quality content.

The secret is in the name itself 'Page Rank'. The rank of the page from 1-10, not the domain.

If you logically think about everything Google can take into consideration, do some reverse-engineering and then work on your site following all these parameters to your best ability, then the only thing that should be stopping from you from ranking is the difference between the diversity and quality of your competitors backlinks.

And the way to beat this is to research your competitors backlinking strategy and try to beat it.
A list of things I'm talking about in regards to your website:
  1. Loading time to all pages should be the best possible
  2. Keyword Used in All appropriate places ie. Title, description, h1, h2 tags and used in a responsible manor amongst your content.
  3. Use of Semantic keywords too
  4. The ratio between how many people search for that term and how many of those click on your website in the rankings. Independent of positioning. Then work out the percentage and make a common sense decision on whether the clicks you get correlates well with your positioning
  5. Good use of Website Structure
  6. The time user spends on your website before heading back onto google (Google can't know how long a user spends on your website if they directly go to another site after, but if the user immediately returns to google after checking your website, google can use that as a good estimate of time spent on your website). Work on trying to increase the time people spend on your site. And if not, make sure the majority leave through your affiliate links.
  7. Backlinks, Rather than do what everyone does, go ahead and check those who you think you can rank above, and then work out where they get their links from, and how you can go one better. I'm not saying to stop those directory submissions and so forth.. because they do still help interms of syndication, and you do get 'some' very limited link juice. Work on getting quality backlinks from pages that are PR 1+ and are relevant.

I've no idea whether halting the creation of your content can affect your Google rankings, as I'm not sure whether Google is bothered by the halt of content if you've already fulfilled the purpose of your website by including all the content you can, maybe someone can chime in on this? I don't think I've been in IM long enough to make a proper assumption about this. I do believe that at least stopping the promotion of your website over time can affect rankings. More so because Google may see others gaining more popularity whilst yours stays the same.

There are more that are not coming to me now, but if I've missed them, chime in.

Sorry I tricked you, but due to a lot of newbies hanging around this forum on an hourly basis, I reckon some are at least going to see this and learn something. For those who think I'm completely and utterly wrong, bring your worst

Jason.

Good rant. The only time that I have noticed a dop in rankings due to me stopping work on my websites has been because I have stopped building backlinks to a certain page. I think that after a few weeks if your page isnt generating the same levels of backlinks as before then Google suspects that its rank is artificially high and penalises you. It has happened on two of my pages so far and I have had to right tooth and claw to get them back to the top spots!

      Right on the dollar!

Well I don't know about weeks, but it sure has happened to mine after a few months.

Still wondering on the whole content creation side of things though.

    Nice thread man.

Totally with you on this. Activity and popularity are becoming more prevalent in their eyes.

They definitely use whether or not a person stays on your site, or hits the back button as a signal.

I like your implicit message of DO IT RIGHT, and organically build high quality links. Totally aligned with that. It's the only way to do long term SEO.

    Great thread.
