How do your niche sites usually fare in the Google Dance?

Many I am sure have experienced the famous Google Dance (it gets discussed here every day) - I have one right now that went:
- in at no. 4
- bombed back to no. 400 after a few days
- went back in at no. 1 around 3 weeks later
- bombed back down to no. 400 after 72 hours, etc. etc. etc.
What I am interested in hearing is, how do your sites ultimately fare after experiencing the Google dance, i.e. do they usually end up ranking well, or ranking disastrously, or on average somewhere in between?
I would like to see, and probably many of you, does the Google Dance have any ultimate bearing on the ranking of your site?
Also, feel free to comment on things you have done or not done while the site was dancing and whether they affected things, what timeframes were involved, when did things settle down etc.
PLEASE only comment if you actually have something empirical to contribute like, "I did X and the result appeared to be Y", NOT just your opinion - we've got enough opinions around here as it is, I'm trying to collect some evidence!
