Are tags useful for SEO pusposes?

I got confused thinking that tags were just the same thing as keywords but doing some reading this seems to not be the case.

I was planning to just stuff my best keywords in the tags section.

Even so are they not recognized by the engine? If so wouldn't it be a legitimate way to do a little 'keyword stuffing' without being seen to be breaking the rules?

So what is their general purpose plus will they give me any SEO benefits (which is what I'm working on atm)?

Google hasn't read Meta-Tags for years.

I forget who, but I read an article by an SEO agency that did a test - they put a random character string in the tags, let Google, Yahoo and Bing spider it, and ran a search for it.

Google and Bing didn't index the content, at all. Yahoo did, although they're on Bing's algorithm now, so that's probably no longer the case.

Focus on writing good, keyword-rich, legible copy, and make sure your onsite elements - <h> tags and the like, are all good, then focus on your backlink profile. That's all you can do.

    Hope that helps.

It depends on what you're talking about. If you're in Wordpress, then Wordpress Tags can be very useful. I've had Wordpress Tags get indexed before the actual post that they appear in.

If you're talking strictly about keyword meta tags, then 'no', those probably aren't going to matter a whole lot one way or the other, although I still use them.

In the first place if you are gonna keyword stuff - it means your breaking the rule . Keyword stuffing is not generally recommended by Google. The reason is not recommended coz you tend to rank quickly for keywords that have been mentioned in most of the places in your content.

Do not think of keyword stuff like

xxx, xxx y, xxx yy, xxx yyy, xxx y c (Assuming xxx is your targeted keyword)

in the same line or similar that would look spammy but it is always better you scatter your keywords around the page. Having a keyword density of 7% is what you will need if you are thinking of stuffing keyword. Said that, it is usually recommended you have a keyword density of 2-4%.

Like Chris said, it all depends on what your taling about?
    • Wordpress tag
    • Meta Keyword tag

As an example for Wordpress Tags, it's very easy to rank those pages in the SERPs the trick is to have a unique canonical tag on every single page of your site & serve that tag up with php code.

Every single one of my Wordpress tags are ranked in Google SERPs.

Cha-Ching. Wordpress tags are a very big deal. Just go to site explorer and see how many tag URLs are pointing at your domain. Same a related post links, category links, and such.

Wordpress POST TAGS? Hell yes! Use them! You miss out on additional keywords and traffic if you dont use them. But dont overdo it with the tags, use a max of 4-5 or so otherwise it looks like keyword stuffing.

I read where meta tags are still read by hundreds of lesser known search engines out there, so why not add them anyway?
