Okay first off, Hello I have been looking at forums for a while but finally started an account up!

Secondly, let me give you a scenario, say I am looking up the word sandwich on google adwords and realize that it gets 42,000 searches a month according to google and also realize that sandwiches gets 39,000 searches a month is this essentially saying between the two words that there are 42,000+39,000=81,000 searches or do I have to subtract the amount of searches sandwiches gets from sandwich because of the word being inside the other.

If you need more clarification let me know, thanks.

If you searched both term in quotes IE "sandwiches"
then result are unique otherwise sandwich would be included in sandwiches.

You need to ensure that you have changed the match type from the advanced options to exact then you will have the estimated search for that exact keyword.
