URL with WWW and with out

Hey guys I have a potential client that has 1535 backlinks to his url with WWW. now he only has 84 back links to his url without the WWW. but with a PR of 2

My question is:

How does this affect his ranking? his ranking for one of his keyword with the url that has only 84 links. But nowhere to be found with the one that has the 1535 links.

How can I fix this? I have never come across this before I have always built my backlinks with out the www. because I read somewhere I think was on Google forum that Google sees this as two different url's.

Do a 301-redirect for the non-www & point them to the www.

Thanks Yukon I thought of doing that, but should I advice my potential client in the case he doesn't want to sign with me to stop building links to his www. url since is not even ranking and has no PR?

I know they're working with supposedly a top nosh SEO firm, but to tell you the truth they are doing a pretty crappy job.

If your doing this as a business (not a friend) than like someone else stated above, let them deal with it on their own.

If they are a paying customer than sure, advise them to make a decision on which one they want www or non-www & stick with it for all future liinks. To correct what's done already use the 301-redirect.

        Every little bit helps.

    I wouldn't advise a POTENTIAL client - I'd advise a client of that though.
