Porn sites linking to me

I noticed in Stat Press of my costume sites that some of my best referrers are from a handful of porn sites. I have never linked to porn sites and have no idea why they would be linking to me or why anyone interested in porn, would want to come to my site.

Is there any SEO ramifications to having porn sites link to you? My rankings have plummeted and I'm thinking this may be why. Any idea what I can do now?

    Cathy, that doesn't make any sense. Otherwise competition would crush their competitors with those links.

    But a deeper analysis is the best way to understand what happened. Most probably a major change in algo caught your site.

    Edit:

    Sorry, forgot to add you could take a look at SE's Top 10, see what changed, new sites on top10, similar problems in other sites you own, check your server status, and finally check your source code (just in case).

    Bet other warriors will bring some other ideas.

      Thanks Fernando. I checked my source code and it looks ok. How do I check my server status?

      Oh, I need to clarify cos I made it sound like this was happening to multiple sites. It's actually only happening on one site.

        Have you checked your competition for that keyword? Probably you got down and someone else's site got up.

        You can check your server status in CPanel, see in Awstats/Webalizer if there are any errors.

    Well, if you have a costume site, maybe there is a certain costume that appeals to that crowd and they're giving you free traffic. Have you followed the link back?
    I don't think porn links will hurt, as some of them rank very highly.

    Maybe there is a benefit for the porn site. The cpanel stats are looked at by Google and spot these sites linking to you and YOU by way of your cpanel are LINKING to them!

    Maybe they send a lot of these links out from their website to spread links about that Google will find and get a lift in the serps.

    It used to be that backlinking from porn sites to your competitors' website would cause it to go down in the SERPs. I think the term was called "Google Bowling". Google said they did take care of it - but they really said "most" of it.

    Just google "Google Bowling" and see what you can find out...

      I checked the server in cpanel and didn't even see those sites listed there at all.

      Anyway, I am thinking since the costume site is a "princess costume" site, a few of the costumes are sexy so maybe that's why they are linking too me.

      Guess there's not much I can really do about it but I'm going to put in some effort to get some high quality links to try to "dilute" the porn links.

    Its possible your domain was owned by some porn site owner previously and the people who link to you still continue to think its a porn site.
