Use same Anchor text or not...

Hi,

I've read/heard/seen so many articles, blogs, ebooks which state when building links, you shouldn't use the same anchor text, as Google will give it less weight.
So they recommend you (for example) use 50% of the links with your main keyword then 30% for an LSI and the rest split with the actual URL or various 'click here' type anchors.

I've also recently subscribed to the excellent Angela's backlinks package. She states that you shouldn't mix up your anchor texts and you should use the same one.

I know Angela is very well respected but I'd just like to get some opinions on this please?

Now bearing in mind, I'm trying to rank a long tailed micro niche site, so I'd like to focus on one long tailed keyword (for now).

Thanks,
MMO Guy.

if you put 100% of your links with same anchor text , google will consider it as spam and your backlinks will not be indexed

To avoid this always put your backlinks with some other anchor text atleast 10 % .

Its really easy for Google to track down a site that may be spamming through its anchor text. I would say to be safe use your main keyword 50% of the time, and the other 50% rotate between 5 or so other keywords. These could be secondary keywords that you would like to rank for too. Not just "Click Here" although it might be a good idea to throw a few "Click Here" or "Visit Now" links into the mix.

The fact of the matter is that your backlinking strategy needs to appear natural to the search engines.

If you have the same anchor text for every link, only one of two things is possible. Either everyone on the entire Internet who links to your website has conspired to use the same anchor text, or conversely, you, or someone on your behalf, built the links. Of course, the search engines will conclude that the latter is true, and thus view your backlinks as spam.

Therefore, I have to agree with the others who have stated that it is important to vary your anchor text.

Sorry, but you are all wrong. The days of varying anchor text are GONE! Sure, it's not too bad to throw in a few 'click here' anchors, but go read some literature by Terry Kyle. By varying your anchor text and URL structure you are simply confusing Google as to what exactly your site is about. Simply put, if you use 'dog collars' for all your anchors, Google knows your site is about dog collars. In my own experience I've found that varying anchor text actually hurts your rankings for your main keyword (you won't rank as high as quickly as you could).

John - Can you provide evidence that this is true or the name of the specific paper from Terry?

I have always believed, as with most of the warriors posting to this thread, that anchor text should be varied. The opinions as to the optimal mix have differed. John, I would also appreciate if you could show the evidence of your belief. Thanks.

I have used 60/30/10 since day dot with magnificent results.

The real answer is there is no answer. Do what you feel is right. Time will tell you.

A quick example. I wish I could tell you the phrase but alas...

In 18 months from day dot I have used the 60/30/10 rule on one particular site.

      4WordKeyPhrase/3WordKeyPhrase/2WordKeyPhrase/

I have been #1 for 4 and 3 word for months and months. I am #23 for the 2 word that gets 28K exacts a month

I now do 2WordKeyPhrase/3WordKeyPhrase/4WordKeyPhrase/ when backlinking

Congrats. To everyone, I didn't mean to say that you won't see results if you vary anchor text - I have no doubt that with strong SEO you will see good results no matter what. That should be your main focus anyway.

Not to be vague, but my evidence is simply the fact that when I started using the same URL structure and same anchor text, I got my niche sites ranking so much more quickly than when I was using varied URL structure and anchor text. Backlinksforum.com is Terry's forum, and Backlinks Hydra is his signature product, which I would highly recommend.

Always use variation when it comes to anchor texts. The same anchor text will not look normal to google and will probably put you in the sandbox.

This is EXACTLY what I have seen happen so many times. Google likes natural links - which is stating the obvious - but so many people over-optimize for one keyword!

I've experienced sites receiving penalties in the past for using the same keyword over and over in anchors - so you've got to be careful.

Think how a natural link would look... nine times out of ten it wouldn't just include the main keyword and nothing else.

Sure, you'll get rankings doing this, but they probably won't last.

Google updates and changes frequently. I would suggest perhaps that having more than one anchor text would be a good thing. But you should mainly focus on the 1.

Some people suggest an 80/20 split, 80% for your main keyword to be used as the anchor text "male yeast infection" and 20% with variables like "male yeast infection book", "male yeast infection review", or "male yeast infection cure".

This makes sense, but if you want to rank for just one term per site, I suggest you use 100% anchor text ("male yeast infection").
