Can SEO help a charitable organization?

I'm involved with a Kiva-like organization that provides microfinancing in rural China, mostly for women.

I'm good at SEO, and it occurred to me maybe that might be useful for fundraising. I doubt it, but I'd love to be proven wrong. Seems to me that this is not a case of filling a desperate need and that therefore standard SEO techniques are not helpful. Most people know what organization they want to donate to, so I'm guessing that optimizing sites for "microfinancing", [name of organization], or even something like "chinese microfinance for women" would not be helpful in attracting donors. They already rank #1 for "chinese microfinance" anyway.

I think the best thing to do would be simply to publish solid content like video interviews with volunteers, articles describing the cause, and so on. Probably the ideal case would be a viral video, which is not unimaginable.

Or am I missing something painfully obvious, as I so often do?
