Hi guys. I'm new here and to SEO.

Not sure if this topic has been posted (I'm betting it has but couldn't find any threads)But I've been browsing the Internet and I've come across a subject called "outlinking"

Some sites are saying it's a bad idea. And some say it's a good idea.

I've done some outlinking on my site thinking "what do you have to lose?"

However, I'm not sure it's a good idea and would like to get your take on it.

Is this a good SEO strategy? Linking out to authority sites as extra valued content?

Regards

Sure it is a good idea, as long as you're providing relative and quality outbound links, it is definitely a good idea. Google doesn't like sites that don't link out AT ALL.

      Yes, I completely agree.

Linking out to authoritative pages and sites definitely helps. There has been a lot of talk about Huffington Post somewhat recently and their SEO tactics. Everyone focuses on how they use their keywords to rank higher (used in titles, high keyword density, etc.), but there are other more important (imho) factors as well. HuffPo is a "hub" as well as an authority in the eyes of Google. Scroll down the home page and check out their super massive list of "do follow" outbound links to other authoritative sites.

They have a PR 8 homepage. 154 "do follow" outbound links -> 37% of their total links (internal + outbound). Zero nofollow links anywhere on the homepage. Makes PageRank sculpting look kind of silly to me...

I would say don't link out MORE than you link to your own pages, but linking out to other great sites is definitely helpful. Good sites link to other good sites.

"good pages seldom point to bad ones."

I've never seen another news organization link out like that. That's amazing. Glad to know that I'm atleast doing something right then.

I'm only going to link out if I think visitors would find it useful because I can't supply all that information on the site. It's just not practical.

Well that's good new. Thanks for the answer. I've linked out to only authority sites like tourist boards etc.

get as closely related to your keywords as you can
        for example

i always do a search on wiki for my exact keyword
and if the page has PR then i outlink to it

make sure the page has PR
and that it is as tightly related as possible

I would go more tight than just travel sites, but if you run out of tightly related, expand to travel in general where it is necessary

          Thanks Tyler

Yeah. I have tourist information about a particular city. Then I link to the official site for more information about that cities tourism attractions/activities etc.

If it's about rail, i link out to official rail sites. If it's about tourism, then tourism sites.

Linking out (within reason) won't hurt your rankings if you are linking out to the right information. If the link adds to the content then it will be a good link.

Linking out to other pages helps build the theme for the page. It isn't going to diluate your PageRank enough to be a concern.

The only issue is leaking visitors off your site. BUT your content is going to be so interesting, entertaining and or informative that they'll come right back, anyway.

From what I've read so far about the "Farmer" algo update, it may hurt your rankings in Google's SERP's if you're linking out to sites that you're referencing in your content and you make the links no-follow. The key, as you mentioned, is linking out to the right info - to a relevant authority or niche site with quality original content that adds value to a visitors search experience.

thats interesting.. they are getting pretty good at figureing out all the little tricks arent they?!

if that is the case.. i would go find one that is GENERALLY related to your keyword, but NOT ranking for your keyword, and make it dofollow. THAT WAY you wont be helping your competition, just yourself

      Thank Fraggler

This is what I'm hoping this will accomplish.
