What are some suggestions to get sites out of the Google sand box, that are a good few months old but still showing no signs of ranking?

You NEED unique content to your sites that is not on others. If you generate articles or reviews and put them on your site, it'll boost your quality score. You can also try back links and other SEO tricks to get your sites ranked.

Really ramping up link-building to a consistent level. Some sites just WON'T rank 'on their own', I really wish I knew why, but they 'need help' in the form of backlinks - the tougher the niche, the more you need (at least as many as your competitors on the front page in the medium term).

First you have to know what is Sandbox?

The Sandbox (a.k.a. Sand boxing or the sandbox effect or the Google penalty) is a name given to an observation about the way Google ranks web pages in its index. It is the subject of much debate—its existence has been written about but not confirmed and several observers state that they have observed the contrary.

    Hi Krowon,

Click your heals together three times, and say to yourself there's no place like my homepage.

The "sandbox" only exists in your imagination. Do whatever it takes to imagine it doesn't exist and you are free from it.

Your page has not been placed in a sandbox penalty (there is no such thing). You earn your page's rank by creating content that is extremely relevant to your targeted keyword and promoting it throughout the community of users that might be interested.

If you are not ranking well then you probably have not done the above as well as your competitors.

While I agree that in the OP's case he's likely screaming "Sandbox!" when he's not really in it, but the idea that the sandbox doesn't exist is horrible misinformation.

Here we go again, the old sandbox debate.

I am a recent convert from believing in the sandbox. I can see how for someone inexperienced it can seem that their site is 'stuck' somewhere way down on page 40, and so they cry 'sandbox' because they have read that phrase somewhere and they fear that that is what they are experiencing.

In reality, although there MIGHT be a situation where Google penalises a site in some way, or even removes it from the index altogether (for blackhat activities, backlinks from bad neighbourhoods, malware or whatever), I would say this is VERY unusual.

What newbies tend to call the Sandbox is usually nothing more than the Google algorithm doing its dance. Almost ALL my sites do some time on page 40 at some point or another, usually several times. It's almost like some kind of interim ranking, or no ranking at all, while the algo is deciding on the new ranking.

What is POSSIBLE is that the site ends up STAYING at position 400 or wherever because newbie says, "I am sandboxed" and gives up doing any more promotion, backlinking, adding new content or anything else and Google says, "Nothing doing here". It's also POSSIBLE (and I am not saying that is the case here) that the site is just plain RUBBISH and doesn't deserve any higher ranking! It might be poorly optimised for its keywords, in fact it might not even be targetting any keywords, the owner might somehow be expecting it to appear in the top ten for some random keyword or other!

Like I said, I am a convert now - recently I made a new QUALITY site on an .org domain which went in at position 21. After a few weeks it bombed to, like, page 100 and there was no sign of it for a week. Did I worry? Not in the least tiny bit, because now I know it'll be back (guess what, it's back at no. 18 now, with almost NO promotion from me).

So in short, it's not worth arguing about the Sandbox - even if there was one you would have to do something VERY stupid to get in there. Just keep doing the SEO you need to be doing and you have nothing to fear from the Bogeyman.

Well, at least one of is promoting misinformation.

I have acknowledge that it (the sandbox) does indeed exist within our own minds. I have also acknowledge that Google uses trust as a factor in ranking and trust is earned over time. The point is that there is nothing you can do to trigger the sandbox effect, nor is there anything you can do to prevent it. Every new webpage that is ever published must earn trust just like any other.

While yes there are indeed penalties that Google serves out when you make serious violations of their webmaster guidelines, those penalties involve the removal of trust which effect the value of your outbound links towards other pages or the complete removal of your website from their index.

I agree that newbies tend to freak out and scream "OMG SANDBOX" during the normal google dance, but that does not mean that it does not legitimately exist. I assure you that it does.

I went ahead and tested it out once and for all. I created a new site and targeted twelve low competition keywords. I built some good quality links and easily ranked in the top 10 for all twelve of them, and top 2 for several. I let them stew there for a few weeks, they settled in pretty solidly.

Then, I blasted the site with 10,000 blog comments. Bam, all of the sudden, every keyword was gone off the rankings entirely. Not dropping onto the next page, not even dropping onto page 40, gone completely (or at least out of the top 1000, which is as deep as most checks go). This, again, is for every single keyword (though all keywords retained their rankings just fine on Bing). It has been this way for nearly a month now.

This is not the google dance. I've seen the dance with almost every website I've started up (which is a lot), and this ain't it. These are easy keywords, some of which probably don't have a single other site using that anchor text on the entire internet. I used the same initial link building strategies that I've used with dozens of other websites that all never dropped nearly this drastically or nearly this far. Only one did. Only the one that I sent 10,000 blog comments at, even though it was the EASIEST of the bunch to rank.

Go ahead and try it for yourself. Pick an easy keyword and a new domain. Target it, rank for it, let it stew for a few weeks. Then blast tens of thousands of low quality links at it and your site will be out of the top 1000 within a couple of days, guaranteed.

Like I said, I agree with you that newbies often scream sandbox when they're not in it. 95% of sandbox claims are probably just people being stupid, but that doesn't mean that it's not real.

There are people out there that can blast 100,000 links at their site in an evening with an hour's worth of work. If there was no such thing as the sandbox do you really think there would be any low/medium competition niche that they didn't control?

            Hi Vcize,

That sounds like QDF, which is a temporary boost, not a penalty. The link blast was probably just a coincidence. Did you have a control group? Can you duplicate with both a test group and a control group and get the same result?
