I have site running for the past 2 months, with 10 articles that each one is built for a certain keyword.

I see in Google Analytics that 1 keyword is responsible for 70% of my traffic to that site, and I'm ranked at #5 for that keyword in Google for the broad match in united states result.

now Google keyword tool says that I should get 6,600 clicks for #1 ranking for month, and I'm getting 12 clicks every month for #5.

Is Google data is messed up?
If I get to #1 I will get 6600 clicks?

Is that result an exact one, rather than 'broad' or 'phrase'? In terms of how many visitors you would get from being number 1 - it depends on a number of factors. The number could be higher than that, it could be lower than that. If you saw your site when you did a search for that keyword, would you click on it? What I mean is, you should make sure you have a strong title and description that makes it easy for searchers to click on it.

The exact match data is going to be a better estimation.

Then you have to remember that CTR drops exponentially down the ranks. Also, your title tag and meta description will impact your CTR, make sure you have good ad copy.

This explains what "broad" actually means :

Broad Match: This is the most primitive form of keyword input. An example would be:

      online playstation games

But since it’s a broad match it would also trigger for the following phrases:

      playstation games online

      games online playstation

      playstation online games

The problem with this is that often when the words in a particular phrase a rearranged they can become untargeted & mean something completely different to what someone is actually searching for. Thus reducing your CTR & potentially losing you money in clicks.

thanks for your help Liam and Jonathan, now i see that for the exact match it's 110 searches per month locally, is it still worth chasing? for the phrase match i get 2900 monthly local searches.

Generally speaking, I go after keywords with 100+ monthly searches. Sometimes I go lower than that if they are easy to rank for. Keywords that will generate more searches are of course worth more time and effort in my opinion though
