Say I wanted to rank for blue steel hammers for an inner page.. and my competitor is amazon or say ebay for a certain page..

That certain page only has say 5 to 10 backlinks for that specific page(keyword) but their entire site has thousands..

Can I rank for that page? I am trying to understand seo for inner pages..

Thanks in advance!

Kim

  • Yes, that is easy to achieve, without a doubt. Your page will be more relevant for the target keyword since you actively do onpage optimization and even more so because you actively backlink the page.

What the hell does that mean?

It is easy to optimize your inner page and get ranked in search engines if you have the knowledge in optimizing your main page. Just do the optimization work for inner page as like what you have done for main page. Try to add your keywords in the title tag, and a unique meta description with that keyword. Also you can add content with that particular keyword, make use of heading tags like h1 to h6. And build backlinks for that particular page. It is better to have the file created in that keyword.

Making your inner pagers ranked is not that hard. Because there is no difference in ranking your homepage and inner pages

The nonsense keeps piling up...let's start digging out.

Amazon and the like are not #1 due to backlinks.
      Neither is wikipedia.

They are #1 due to authority and trustworthiness.

Authority is gotten via massive amounts of content.

Trustworthiness refers to google's view of your site,
taking into account many things that one builds over
time, or being too big to ignore right out of the box.

The best way is to try for a product niche page.
That is, instead of one book on plumbing, do a page on
      best books for plumbing.

As far as blue steel hammers, that's also on the right track.
Do a page on the best blue steel hammers.

If they were so easy to beat, nobody would be asking this question.

It's not easy to beat amazon for what they rank for. They rank for
reasons many of us can only dream about.

As others have alluded to, it's not as scary as it sounds - even though you've got big competitors. Say you're wanting to rank for 'steel blue widgets', chances are your site is themed around 'widgets' in general - that's one advantage you have over Amazon. Then your site as a whole has generic 'widget' links - even better. And if you build yourself a page very specifically about 'steel blue widgets' and you optimise it well, then you can easily do a better on-page SEO job than Amazon and eBay because they're both hopeless at that.

Finally then - all you need are links. Get some nice juicy (not too spammy) links back to your inner pages with relevant anchor text, and you'll be flying.

@paulgl - I get what you're saying, and I certainly agree about making your page as themed as possible. Lot's of relevant, original content is good. But despite Amazon's authority, it is possible to beat them. They have some great positions on some terms, but there are plenty where they don't. Just have a look around at some book titles on Google. Many have Amazon in prime spots, many don't.

Themed page, themed links, fresh content, it's not that tricky.

In fact, from the quick survey I've done, I think Wikipedia is probably the one to beat in the book market at least!

You can rank for anything you want. But is it worth it?

If the title + descriptoin doesn't include the keyword, the pr is 0, and it has 0 backlinks, it is a lot easier.

If the amazon page is optimized, ie. exact match title + description, and it has high pr and matching anchor text backlinks, its going to take a lot longer.

If you want to rank your inner pages I would suggest to have keywords that are natural and describes the summary of the content.

Keywords, great content and backlinks. You will rank on inner pages just as you rank on your home page.

Yes, it is more than possible. The chances are that these large authority sites aren't highly optimized for that inner page phrase. They are related to it in a looser fashion.

All you need to do is ensure that your page is better optimizaed. Good content with related keywords, H1 tags, targeted title tag, alt tags (with related descriptions), div title tags etc etc.....

Then build links based around your target keyword phrase... but mix it up a little and build a handful of links per day.. every day.
