Starting an article site - any point?

Just from doing (QUALITY!) mass article submissions and blog network posts a few times I wonder at the people running these article sites. Is there any point?

Aside from the question of being in an Adsense TOS grey area (something about 'original content'), isn't it quite handy to have people constantly submitting content to your site? Couldn't you set up an article site (using Wordpress or one of the other generic scripts), make sure you were on the list of the major article submission bots (AMR etc.) and blog networks (Free Traffic System etc.) and then wait for the submissions to come in and just ignore the rubbish and use the good stuff, maybe even rewrite it a little to improve it? Less money than buying PLR, less work than writing it yourself!

Just wondering, any point?

I started an article directory recently using Wordpress and have been surprised at how fast it is growing... In my opinion it is worth it if you are ready to be a slave to the review queue until you can afford to outsource or hire editors. That being said, there are so many article directories the competition is fierce. And other options as you stated.

Yes, the review queue would be the scariest thing. I was thinking of literally just hand-picking one or two good articles per day (maybe just in a narrow niche) and ditching the rest, especially all the auto-spun gibberish, but it would still be a chore, agreed.

When you say competition, if you are on the list in AMR, say, aren't you going to get blasted articles the same as any other site? So I guess you mean competition for ranking with essentially the same content?

And what do you say about the so-called Adsense original content requirement, which appears to be non-existent that I can see. You see people claim this a lot, but I don't see this in the TOS anywhere. And of course, ALL article sites have Adsense on them...

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

I think your idea is quite good.

I can't help you with your Adsense issue, however I would like to add that I recommend that you make a specialized directory, meaning only for one niche.

You could pick some profitable niches and get your directories in the auto submitters lists and then simply hand-pick the articles that match your niche.

Thanks, yeah, there was a very similar discussion on the Main forum actually yesterday. People seemed to think there are too many articles sites around, that it's too competitive, but I feel like a narrow niche could work. Though of course if it's too narrow you may not get any submissions to your category...

I can spot a good article quite quickly amongst all the autospun rubbish, but you still have to wade through it all, and I don't have time, so maybe it's something to think about VERY carefully before diving in!

As suggested above I would also say just to choose one niche as there is quite a lot of competition whit general article directories. However, whit niche one it does not grow as fast as the general article directory might do and if you can manage to start a popular general article directory then eventually you will do very well. And yes, signing up to article distribution services can help you to get it going.
