How to pick the right domain

Just wondering what your opinions are on choosing TLD's for SEO ranking.
Which domain would do better in say... Canada?

keyword.CA or keyword.COM ?

I am talking traffic strictly from within Canada.
Consider all info are equal, age, content, domain name, just a different TLD.

Does a .COM always get higher ranking?

Please share your comment.
Thank you

Personally, I would choose a .CA for canadian traffic.

While it's not much harder to get a .com to rank, a .CA will connect better with the users, plus I believe it DOES have a ranking advantage in Canada...

My advice is - How many .ca's do you see ranking #1 on Google search?

Here in the USA - NOT THAT MANY! Actually ... NONE!

I would go for .com's and if you have trouble finding domain names, type in domain prefixes black hat on Google.

He is talking about CANADIAN traffic only, so he'll be using Google.CA and most of the top ten are .CA domains. Go to Google.CA and type in "money" three of the top five are .CA bar wikipedia.

      Go with .CA

Yes, not too many .CA ranking high.
I guess if a .com and .ca are on the same result page,
the preference would be to go with a more localized .ca result.

I would stick to a .com domain and get it ranking. Later on, for personal branding I would get a .ca domain and just do a simple re-direct to the .com domain that is already ranking.

domain extension will not be as important now as link building... so from today's SEO perspective - it doesn't really matter if you get a .com or .ca for canadian traffic.

If you do have the .ca - it will be much harder to rank outside of Canada than a .com - so overall .com is better.

That said - things might change in the future, so if you can get the .ca as well as the .com that would be best.

Then put some simple content on the .ca and do basic link building for the .ca that will link to the .com

It's much better to choose .ca if you're target audience is the Canadian population. However, .com is also preferred in the event you are targeting a wider scope of audience BUT it'sway too hard to rank.

      That's right, you can't!

You can, use Google.CA - why would a .CA show up in Google.com. Just as many .co.uk and .frs you see.

I used google.ca for a bit but quickly switched to google.com for normal surfing so I don't limit myself to canadian results. I am sure a lot of canucks are using google.com for the same reason.

I wish google detects searchers IP location and give .ca results even if using google.com.

Normally when you hit Google.com it redirects you to Google.ca in Canada, so anyway i would suggest you to choose a better keyword and forget about the extension it Doesnt matter in my opinion and if you ask a Better experienced SEO person (i know everyone's good here so no offence) He/she would suggest you a better keyword and better link building etc

Choose anything which suits in ur desired niche and Boom !!
(i can give you so many good examples of other sites with other extensions so please don't be confused)
