Leaving just a URL will work as a back link, anchor text just makes it look more professional. Anything that links will work as a back link.

Are you talking about putting it in the actual text of the comment?

Usually the link is created to the Name Field in your comment. Some blogs you can get away with using a Key Phrase in the name field, however on some blogs this will get your comment disallowed as spam. Have a look and see what other comments have already been made. If they use Key Phrases then good chance you can too.

If you want to put a URL in your actual comment this will in most cases just show up as text and there will be no link as the HTML is usually disabled in the comment itself.

Yep, the anchor text used will just be the name you enter. Sometimes in the actual comment field itself a naked backlink works but it's best to see what type of comments are being approved already.

If the blog allows usernames to be keywords, you can sneak in a keyword that way. If not, you can leave the URL in your comment as the search engines do consider URL mentions in cyberspace. In this case , you get a URL mention. That is much better than nothing.

hally has a point, many of the higher blogs will not let you use anchor text in the name, and make you use a name, whether it yours or one you make up. I agree with this since most people that are using anchor text in the name are only spamming anyway. (I say most, not all) The other thing about many blogs is that they are no follow, so what you need to concentrate on when blog commenting is good useful information that will cause people to visit your site.

Anchor link is most important to get backlinks for some specific keywords for which you are trying to improve your rank on some specific keywords which user search most on search engine.
