SEO vs Affiliate Sales

Let's assume you make a whole produce line of fancy cogs. Not just any cogs, but fancy cogs that are highly desirable in our pretend universe. Like most retail products, the cost to make and deliver the goods is roughly 15% of the overall budget.

(Simple math: if we sell the cog for $100, it costs us $15 to make)

Obviously getting the product in front of all the other cog makers out there is a high priority, and even though your cog has been distinguished, the cog market is saturated, especially with ACME Cog's multi-million dollar budget.

Knowing that you have an uphill battle, you go after some long-term keywords and get some decent results ~ 5,000 unique visitors per month. However, your eye is on the prize, and you want to take it to the next level.

At what sales point do you think is appropriate to start investing in something like ClickJunction (remember this is a physical product, and CJ costs $3k to start and $3k in escrow)?

Well, something like clickjunction COULD benefit you, but starting your own affiliate program is probably more beneficial. There are many developers that could help you in that aspect. You could very reasonably get 5K visitors a month, and have your own affiliate program. That is what I would do... SEO first, then incorporate your own affiliates. Hell, even resellers or let them use you as a drop shipper.

I'm thinking you need to start with a smaller affiliate like ShareASale that is only $700 to start and see how that goes...

For ****s and giggles, let's assume your cog is an industry leader when it comes to performance. Not well known by the end cog user, but very well known to the watchmakers. Because of this success, you have a larger than average marketing budget.

PS. Tried running our own affiliate program before; will never do it again for a physical product. Nigerian orders + stolen credit cards + having to pay for tracking/shipping + refunds + charge back fees == headaches == need the highest quality of affiliate networks.

I guess what I'm really curious of... is if I currently spend $1,000 a month in SEO and get $15,000 a month back out; when is it the best time to launch an affiliate campaign?

its a highly unique question that is a decision you have to make as everyone will give you an opinionated answer. Im a good marketer so i still depend on my self to generate sales but if you open up the aff. program it could really make a difference. keyword is could not absolutely so the answer is based on opinion.
