Google Vs. The Warrior Forum

Hi everyone,

The reason I'm writing you is because with the most recent spate of changes to Google, I felt a bit of collective action might be taken by Warriors.

My Plan?

I have a domain ready to go to create a non-profit info-sharing site devoted to monitoring how Googles actions and policies affect our industry.

No ads or aff links permitted, the goal of this site would simply be a way for us to pool our insights and tricks in one easy-to-find center, rather than fishing around on forums.

I would set this site up on WordPress and grant permissions to all those interested.

Sounds like a waste of time to me.

There's absolutely no need to chase Google around trying to stay ahead of its algorithm changes.

If you can't think of anything better to do - you probably need a new business model.

No one bases their entire business on Google anymore...

But that doesn't mean that people looking to keep pace are wasting their time.

I think that would be pretty cool actually for those of us who are using Google. I say go for it, I don't think there's anyone else doing something like that.

It depends on your business model. If you have to rely on Google to make money - there's a problem.

Chasing Google rankings is a waste of time for most people - it's just that a lot of people have no idea how to make money any other way so they desperately try and game Google to get their traffic and then cry when Google turn the tap off.

If you think you need Google to make your business work then that's a good indication you need to focus on other ways to make money - not spend even more time trying to stop Google hurting you.

I get what you're saying. But I dabble in many forms of lead generation and maintenance (which includes mail), and as much as I resent Google, I won't cut them out of the equation entirely.

I strongly believe that collectively reporting on changes with the system would be of benefit to anyone's game plan.

That's your choice - I'm just saying that you should be sure it's actually worth the effort in comparison to other things you could be doing for your business that you do have control over.

The more focus you put on something you don't control - the less focus you have for other things.

It's useful for most people to give some consideration to getting search traffic, but only as much as it makes sense above other things.

It's easy to default to wanting search traffic because you don't need to do much thinking when in reality you could probably get a much better response by proactively seeking out your target audience where they are rather than trying to get the search engines to send them to you.

But hey - it's your choice. If you want to spend a lot of time trying to work out what Google cares about at any one time that's up to you, but for most people it's just not necessary since Google currently want the same thing they've always wanted and it's not likely to change much. The only things that will change you don't actually control over any way and they can change back as quick as they changed so it just doesn't make sense for most people to get too focused on them.

Unless you're running an SEO company and need to publish thought-leading commentary in order to maintain your status and branding I can't see that the effort is worth it when you can get great results without really thinking about this stuff.

I think you'd be wasting your time. A website like that will never replace forums, people will not feel any "emotional" attachment to it, others will not want to share their data/findings, etc.

Websites like that have been started by others before. The ones that survived became forums (or websites + forums), others simply disappeared.
