A 301 redirect means the page with the 301 does not exist anymore.

Please for the love of all that is holy, do not do SEO for a site that no longer exists.

3 months ago, I too changed my domain and for a while redirected from old domain. last month, I took old domain offline and working my rankings on new one since. My traffic dropped, in fact, I was nowhere in SERP's since last month. Now I am back with good organic traffic on new domain. It's all a question of time but you need to let go the old domain if you want new domain to rank is what I found.

It appears bots can see the redirection being done and penalize us for it, just as if bots were not happy to see a redirection instead of the content that use to be there. Let go old domain if you want new one to be considered by SE's...

Hmmm. That's an interesting statement. That a 301 means the
page does not exist anymore. Never thought of it like that. It
means that the page has moved permanently. Does that mean
it does not exist? Well, you could have the page still exist and do
a 301 redirect via htaccess, but your browser would be redirected.

It depends on how frequently your site is crawled and if google
will update their listings. Here's something to chew on:

I have a page 301'd to a sub page. But, if I do a search for the
domain by itself, the domain.com shows up and what is on it.
The page exists, but if you click to it, you are 301'd to the subpage.

I think there is a option in the Google webmaster tools to change a domain name for a site. Once you select a site, there is a option for "Change of Address". The notes on the page say "If you're planning to move your site to a new domain, use the Change of Address tool to tell Google about your new URL. This will help us update our index faster and smooth the transition for your users."

Don't know how it will affect your google rankings and definitely wont help with other search engines, but might be better than nothing.
