Hi all, I'm working with a friend who started a classified ad site, FrogAds.com on Dec 15th 2010.
We're happy with progress considering the launch has been so recent, but of course we're looking at gaining organic traffic for 4 keywords as a good foundation for increasing traffic, in addition to the advertising that's being purchased.
A company engaged to provide seo to get these words to page one missed their mark and the words are now scattered somewhere around the top ten pages (approx).
I understand some of seo theory and do put it into practice on my own sites but I don't have experience with successful results to really be able to help FrogAds without help, hopefully, from experienced people.

Adding fresh content regularly has always been recommended for sites, but with a classified ads site there are no blocks of text about topics for this opportunity to exist, so I'm at a bit of a loss on this one.
The home page of course is also simply an index and little else, so the opportunity for keyword links seems limited.

Could I ask for ideas on what we could do to bring our keywords along towards page one? The keywords are normal mainstream ones like classified ads, free ads etc.

Thank you all, your thoughts much appreciated, BR88
Does anyone here have good seo credentials and perhaps understands classified ad sites?

For a classified ads site like yours, it is really about getting good quality backlinks. There is only so much you can do with onpage SEO on a site like this. Obviously you would want to have good title tags, but other than that there is not a whole lot of opportunities to target specific keywords.

It's all about backlinks and there might be some opportunities for some traffic from social media sources.

You can PM me if you want to discuss it further.

Just a quick look at an internal page, your on-page seo is weak.

No meta-description, no image seo, related internal links are weak.

One suggestion to get some content on the site so you can target a keyword is by having an introduction or even a 'about us' section someone on your index page. Even if this is after your listings it will help.

Your focus should be sending backlinks with those keywords to the homepage as it is still possible to rank for a keyword without even mentioning that keyword on the landing page.

But still, a little intro or about us will both help the onsite SEO while also giving people who land on your page through a referral an idea and a feel for what the site is about.

Another option is to create some articles that you can place on the site (separate to the listings) and funnel the organic traffic through them. This can be done on third party sites too.

Another suggestion which will help you with traffic.

You have user generated content where it is important for the user to get people to see their own listings. Make it super simple for them to get interest to their listing by adding some social media intergration.

Get a Facebook like/bookmark and a Tweet button on their ASAP. This will help you with both direct traffic as well as building deep backlinks. It will also make it easier for a seller to promote their own listings.

    As far as external backlinks:

When someone post a New Ad, give them multiple easy ways to spread the word.

Give them basic html + forum code to post that backlink for you while they spread the word about whatever they post on your site. Mix the code anchor-text up for your main keywords.

Give them easy twitter + facebook buttons, that will post anchor-text backlinks for you.

Your hosting their Ad for free, tell them to spread the word about their new Ad, which will boost your sites backlinks for free.

If you don't make it easy for them, they won't help you with backlinks.

If you make it easy, they will keep spreading the word (keyword anchor-text) all day long.

This ^^^^ is a really good idea. And you need links, lots of links, for the keywords you are talking about.

From an SEO point of view, here's the best, most advanced thing you can do...Make sure you have a search engine for your site and MAKE SURE you can access this data using keywords in the URL.

This can be done in many ways and is pretty easy to do for someone that knows how and creates a dynamic "page maker" without having to make pages. Simply, it will be the SERPs for different keywords for your classified adds and make them into "pages" that can be indexed by the SEs.

In other words, a link like this:
    www.yoursite.com/old-shoes.php

This would automatically (dynamically) create a search results "page" containing links to all ads"old shoes" and is a way to multiply the number of pages on your site. This is an important concept in SEO, which is how to get as many pages into Google and the other SEs.

Explaining every detail in a forum post is a little tough, but if you don't understand make sure your tech guy does. Again, it's easy for them to do, they just need to be aware when creating a search engine for your ads.

This is an old, but effective and time-tested strategy known as "turning a database inside out". Basically, if you can't do it, tell the tech guy to use mod rerewrite and htaccess to turn the search queries into easy to follow, keyword friendly URLs.

The down side is, this is a content multiplier. If you don't have any ads (content/words), it won't do any good. The more ads (words) you have, the better this technique becomes.

But if you get a good quantity of ads (words), you'll have a page making machine. Search engines index words. The more words you have in Google, in the most different combos and patterns the better. IMO, the is the most important aspect of SEO: Lots of words on lots of pages in lots of combos.
