Can you really make $2,000 a click on Adsense????

Hello fellow warriors,

I've been doing some research on Google Adwords and found some keywords that allegedly have a CPC of $2,000!!!! Also a whole bunch that have CPCs of $1K and A LOT that have CPCs of hundreds of dollars....

Now when I first saw these...I was very excited. Because a friend of mine sent me a list of high paying adsense keywords and I thought to myself, no way in hell the CPC is this much.

So I plugged in the keywords in Googles Adwords Tool and Lo and Behold it was CORRECT!

So my question is, does Google actually pay that much for a keyword? Before i put in all hard work and optimize my blog for these keywords and get quality backlinks, will I actually be getting paid that much per click?

Nope.

It's possible that some advertisers paying for ads in the Google SERPs (so search not content ads) might bid fairly high amounts, but for content ads (i.e. the AdSense program) the figure will be much lower.

So no, unless the advertiser is drunk and makes a big cock-up, AdSense advertisers won't see a massive click.

And @Eswar - it's 68% revenue share, assuming no smart pricing.

I have never heard of anyone who made that much per click and so I am not inclined to believe it is possible, specially as I myself have never earned more than just a few cents per click in adsense.

But it does actually EXIST!

Here type this keywords on Google Adwords tool:

rugs usa

See it for yourself....

So now that we know, Google Adwords does in fact state it is a CPC over $1,000, does it mean you will make a couple hundred dollars from that click?

If not, how come Google put that high CPC there?

A rug costs about hundreds of dollars (from RugsUsa.com)

I don't think the advertiser is so much willing to pay 10 times more the amount of revenue for advertising (AdSense); $2000 a click.

So the question is....according to Google Adwords "rugs us" has a CPC of over $1,000! Check it out yourself....go to Google Adwords keywoord tool and type rugs usa.

Now does that mean, that in theory if you were to optimize a page for rugs USA, you could make a couple hundred bucks per click from adsense?

I know it sounds crazy....so I wanted to see what you think? Why does Adwords post such a high CPC? Also what is the percent Google will give to an Adsense publisher based on the Adwords tool?

Just invert the words writing "usa rugs" and the CPC will be almost $4,000. There are also many other $100+ or $500+ related keywords.

Thanks. Interesting... But how come??? Does it MEAN if you are an Adsense publisher you will get paid a lot of money if someone clicks on an ad optimized for the above keywords?

If not...then how come these figures appear in the adwords tool? What do they actually mean?

As much as I know, that amount should be the average sum you have to pay if you want to buy traffic with adwords for those keywords.

I read an article yesterday from someone with adsense experience and he is saying that most of the time, the best clicks you will get from a keyword are half of what adwords tool shows you.

I created a website and the main keyword had $2.50 in google adwords. The best clicks I got were $1.23 so I tend to believe what that article said. But I don't have much experience with adsense so I might be wrong.

How many times does this need to be said?
The Adwords tool shows how much someone is paying to be displayed on the Search Network. You will NEVER get that much for your Adsense website. Only a foolish advertiser would pay the same amount to be on the Display Network.

And then again, it's how much you will need to bid to be placed high on the Search ads. You almost never pay the full amount. I've bid $50 before on a keyword. The highest I actually paid for that keyword was around $10 though. I also never put that keyword on the Display network. It didn't convert well there. But if I had, I wouldn't have bid more than 50 cents.
So if you want to make sites based on these supposedly very high paying keywords, good luck.

I'm not sure why the tool is reporting such a high number.

Keep in mind that advertisers can set different budgets for search and for the content network. So even if an advertiser is bidding a large amount for CPC, Adsense might not see that high of a number. And, of course, we have to share with Google.

This has been going on for months now... just look at spyfu.com... nothing new, no you will not even get close to it.

However $4 clicks are fairly easy to obtain... but you need to be able to weed out through the BS

Never seen such a high CPC before. I checked the keyword tool now and it shows a similar figure, though I am not sure if it is the actual value, it could be an error.

Who would pay over $1,000 for just one click?? Checked some rugs sites on the first page and most of their products are much lower than $1,000. Doesn't make sense.

well its without a doubt some glitch...but nevertheless interesting.

By the way..the Google AdSense payouts are PUBLIC, they released the numbers a while ago. Let me remember:

For "AdSense for Content" its 68% - for "Search" its 51%.

So, on your AdSense site you do get 68% of what the advertiser pays for the click.

I don't think this is a CPC. This is a guaranteed (whatever this might mean) price per click which would allow any ad to display top in the SERP. However the click price should not be so high!

Even better is that the number shown is the Estimated CPC. I bet when advertisers are running ads for that keyword the cost per click goes up and up and up because they are all competing against one another.

I could not even imagine running a business that pays $4000 for ONE click. Holy $hit!

This is a glitch. It is entirely possible to make $100...even a little more per click. But this isn't accurate unless they have a ppc firm messing things up.

As with much of the data Google is displaying, CPC is derived from a formula. In other words, they use a formula to 'decide' what the baseline cost for a given keyword should be. Clearly some computation in that formula is not perfectly optimized. My guess would be something like a multiplier that's derived from a 'trend' function.

For instance: if the top CPC is calculated as the the average bid times the difference between the top two bids over 30 days, and there happened to be only two bidders, one at a previous high amount, and the only other bidder getting a very low CPC because there weren't other bidders that particular month, you'd end up with a very high multiplier.

I've no idea if that's even remotely accurate, but I'd be willing to bet it's something along those lines - a 'vulnerability' in the way CPC is calculated. This would account for those occasional, clearly wrong CPC's.

  I once had a $21.00 click paid out to me a couple years ago - in the solar energy niche. That means the advertiser was bidding $40-$50/click.

mmm....... nope.

The search network is an other demon. It can't compare to the display network. Google AdSense generates MUCH more traffic than Google Adwords. So, even if there's more competition, bids will be lower because you are not competing for keywords, but your ads will be placed in THEMED websites and there is much more traffic available. Just think of the amount of websites using AdSense that relate to the term you mention...

  Advertisers who pay high amounts for adwords are not going to use the content network which is often made up of sites targeted to a keyword. I think those numbers are skewed but even if they weren't, they won't apply to sites in the content network or to "built to optimise a keyword phrase" sites.
  
  There are some high paying keywords on the search network but high paying advertisers may pay only for ads on specific high ranked specialty authority sites.
  
  When people who pay a lot of money to google or who earn a lot money for google are concerned - the rules are not always the same. Not surprising - and not unfair. Just good business.

  Ok, an Adsense publisher receives a 68% share of each click (this is displayed within your account). The content network will cost on average 28% less than the search network per click making up for the conversion difference (these stats have been published by Google).
  
  When the stats are calculated, it works out that an Adsense publisher will receive just under 50% of the CPC quoted in the keyword tool.
  
  This $2000 click is obviously a bug. Forget about it.

Repeat business plus referrals may afford this.

These numbers may make the life time value
of each customer worth much more then the
first item purchased.

It could come from a bidding war possibly.

Or several other high dollar reasons.

Advertisers will put in massive bids for the search network (ie, people at the end of the buying cycle).

The display/content network (ie, sites running Adsense) are mostly a last resort. They're fine for brand awareness, but for actually getting conversions, they're crap compared to the Search Network. As such, advertisers won't bid highly for the Display network.

The Adwords Keyword Tool displays estimated CPCs for the search network.

Just my 2 cents...

When I was starting off, I targeted a similarly overpriced keyword that just seemed outrageously high. Within a few weeks to a month, that keyword was back to being "reasonably" priced. I'm not sure why it was so high...I'm thinking it may have something to do with the business owner putting an outrageous bid on the keyword to protect their brand and keep other advertisers out? Not sure...
