Hey guys I have a quick question.

I'm currently working on an online store and I can't get it to rank. I'm very bad at doing keyword research and I don't think I ever learned the basics. Anyways, what would it take to get ranked for a keyword such as 'sex' (It's an example of a very high competitive keyword.)

Also, around how many searches should there be for a keyword under quotation that would be fairly easy to get ranked for? 20 000-80 000??

What programs are good for keyword research? Which ones do you guys use and you've seen great results?

Thanks guys

If you want to rank 'easily' for a keyword, having a low number of phrase match keyword competitors is good to have. If I'm trying to rank with little to no work I love it below 30,000.

More importantly is the character of the sites that rank on the first page for your keyword. If they are high page-rank authority sites (like ehow, about.com, wikipedia) you are not going to displace them anytime soon. In that case you could have 1000 competitors and get nowhere near the top. If on the other hand the top results are low page-rank sites or articles, then you can get away with a higher number of competitors.

As far as tools go, you can't beat google's own keyword tool "https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal" will give you everything you need, you can make the whole process simpler by paying a little money and investing in Market Samurai of Micro Niche Finder.

    Hope this helps.

    Another newb here.
Here are my 2 cents: Google keyword tool is for free.
I think I'll be using it exclusively. Market Samurai costs $$$.

For better keyword analysis, you can use Google adwords.

    Hello:

It's sort of a balancing act between the # of monthly searches as found with the Google external keyword tool and the competition for that keyword as simply found by typing the keyword phrase without quotes into Google - the "results" figure will show right below the search box. I find anything below 2,000,000 and it should be fairly easy to rank high. Of course the lower the easier. Make sure you have all your on page SEO correct and then do some backlinking with your keyword phrase in the anchor text.

For keyword research, I use Google keyword tool (free) and the free version of Wordtracker. They very often vary in their results, but I am mainly looking to make sure they are noted in both.

Try to go for "long-tail" keywords - phrases with about 4-5 words in them that are more specific to the niche. You should have a much easier time getting ranked for them.

I'm new to IM and part of your quote gave different advice from what I've heard elsewhere.

I've heard a good way to look up the phrase is with using quotes around your term when searching in Google. You say not to. Can you tell me the reasoning behind both opinions.

      Thanks

I use wordtracker. Going after "sex" good luck. Instead of focusing on one-word keywords you should focus on finding long tail buying keywords for your online store. They are much easier to rank for and convert much better than general keyword terms. Ideally you want to find people in their buying phase and not just in a general search phase.

    For example:

Take the keyword "dog". Not really a great keyword because it's going to take forever to get ranking and if you ever do get there it will be super competitive. Also it's just too general.

But take a keyword like "I want to buy a dog online". Maybe that keyword gets only 50 searches a month but it's specific and it's a buying keyword. Plus it's going to be easy to rank for. And if you can find tons of long tail buying keywords, you will have very good conversions without having to have major traffic. And you'll get top ranking very quickly without much SEO work. Hope that helps.

    - Grab a good seo book or learn enough about SEO from this free forum.

    - Get a domain name with your main keyword in it as an exact match.

    - Market it agressively and no matter what kind of keyword you choosed, if you picked an 100% keyword rich domain with your profitable keyword...it would only take you a few months to rank in the top 10 of Google, Yahoo or MSN.
