Google Keyword Tool - What Degrees of Potential Success Are There?

Hi, I am a guy with no SEO / Adsense experience but I believe I'm kind of familiar with the basic principles of SEO and niches.

I will be using the Google Keyword Tool to find my first niche ever.

Let's assume that I have found a good keyword that has lots of Monthly Searches - say between 50,000 and 500,000 for every single one of its variations.
So it all comes down to competition, right?

Now, I really don't know how much competition is too much competition!
Please have a look at the chart that I made and tell me if I got it right.
Are keywords with Medium competition really useless?
Most of the time they have a better CPC.
So is it possible to exploit a keyword that has medium competition too? Or should I only stick to those keywords that have close to Zero competition?

Have a look at the chart and tell me am I getting it right or am I on the extreme side of things with my chart?

Anyone with an opinion about this?
Or do all of you guys use paid SEO tools and not the free Google Keyword Tool?
If yes, what are some good SEO tools that can do keywprd analysis, competition web site comparisons & etc.?

You should not only look at keyword tool numbers. You should also do a search in google for your keywords with quotes. Then you will see your real competition.

Forget about those Google bars though it helps sometimes but I will trust what I got from a quote search more.

if i am not wrong those competition bars represents adwords competitors bidding to have their ads. You should type your keyword in the actual google and analyse the top 10 sites, see how many backlinks they have, the quality of their backlinks, the PR of the page and if they have the keywords in their url/title.

Correct me if i am wrong.

    Hmm, good advice.
Seems that the Google Keyword tool is useless?
So, what are some good SEO tools then?
Don't the paid SEO tools just use Google Keywords and then report the results they get from it back to you using a little bit more flashy graphics?

From my understanding the bars have no bearing on your competition. They only reflect how many advertisers there may be for that keyword. In order to judge competition you need to look at those sites that appear at the top of the google search for your particular KW.. Top 10 at least..
Their page rank will give you some idea, but you need to look at the actual sites as well in order to judge their strength and what you are competing against

Is Google losing the plot or is there statistics gone to crap? 165,000 searches with no competition? for "electronic cigarette" or is the bar going to show a red color for oh my gosh competition?

The keyword tool can't possibly determine the "real" competition between websites. It's a good tool to use, but not something you should trust blindly.
