Domination Of SERPs Big Brands

Hello Warriors.
Is it just me or is it for a fact that the SERPs on Google is increasingly becoming dominated by the bigger brands. I was searching recently and many of the positions that were once occupied by smaller sites have now been replaced by big companies.
Add to the mix many of the easy backlinking strategies such as blog commenting, forum signatures, and forum profiles don't seem to have the positive effect they did only 6 months ago, it seems to be becoming harder for the small business unless someone has got deep pockets.
Is this really the case or am I being a little negative?
