Hi there

This is my first post on the Warrior forum - love it here and have been getting lots of useful information. Many thanks to all.

Anyway, I have picked up my first SEO client and have hit a bit of pothole today when analyzing the site.

Before I took on the SEO he had made a few changes, specifically changing the main domain to XXgeoterm.com from XX.com. He now has XX.com forwarding to XXgeoterm.com. The reason for the change was to put a local emphasis on his SEO efforts.

Anyway, to date google has not indexed the newer domain name, so that's my first job.

Next, it appears he has setup the following urls with the same content:

XXgeoterm.com/home
XXgeoterm.com/XXgeoterm

You also see the same content as these two pages if you type in the straight domain name i.e. XXgeoterm.com to the browser.

My first question is (I hope this has made some sense so far), what impact will having 3 different pages with the same content have?

Next question is, the main domain XXgeoterm.com does not show in the sitemap. Does this matter?

Apologies if these questions are a little basic but I'm a tad confused and would appreciate any help or advise.

Thanks in advance.
Sam

Make sure that the forward from xx.com to xxgeoterm.com is a 301 redirect through your .htaccess file.

Anyway, to date google has not indexed the newer domain name, so that's my first job.

Google will take time to update its index even if a 301 redirect is in place.

Next, it appears he has setup the following urls with the same content:

    XXgeoterm.com/home
    XXgeoterm.com/XXgeoterm

You also see the same content as these two pages if you type in the straight domain name i.e. XXgeoterm.com to the browser.

There are three versions of the URL that lead to the same duplicate content. This is not beneficial to your site. Put a 301 redirect from xxgeoterm.com/home to xxgeoterm.com so that the home page of the site resolves to xxgeoterm.com
In the same vein, put a 301 redirect from xxgeoterm.com/xxgeoterm to xxgeoterm.com

My first question is (I hope this has made some sense so far), what impact will having 3 different pages with the same content have?

It does not serve any purpose as users are going to be frustrated when they click through the links to these pages to find the same content repeated over and over.

Next question is, the main domain XXgeoterm.com does not show in the sitemap. Does this matter?

If you have placed the 301 redirect properly, the xxdomain.com URL will be updated to load xxgeoterm.com page

      Thanks heaps Raviv.

I'm pretty sure the proper 301 redirects have not been put in place. Will get it all sorted as you suggest.

      Cheers
