Your first step would be to read all the threads in this forum that discuss similar topics as this is a question that is asked at least once a day if not 5+.

I'll quote you what I wrote to someone yesterday as it applies to your situation. When you're done reading, go read those other threads and come back and ask specific questions as this one is just too broad.

Yes, there are some things you have in a niche that aren't in another, but 99% of what goes into ranking one site will apply to what goes into it for another.

    1. Go and choose 10 keywords based on your friend's site for that niche that have at least enough searches per month to be worth your time, and have medium to little competition.
    2. Out of those 10, build the site structure around them, choose good meta information, headers, category names, URL structure, etc.
    3. Write great content.
    4. Research how the top 10 for each of those 10 keywords you chose setup their site. Write down those patterns that seem to help them rank and then make any changes necessary to your site.
    5. Copy the backlinks of all those sites as best you can. Follow their backlink profile and make sure yours is very similar.
    6. Build more backlinks.
    7. Build more backlinks.
    8. Build more backlinks.
    9. Build more backlinks.
    10. And build some more.

This guy knows what he is talking about. Think about it, what is the best way to the 1st page of Google..copying what has already worked for those who are on the 1st page.

You need to understand competition, if you once understood then I think there is no need to ask such question.

You might want to rethink the keywords that you are trying to target.
Try going for some long tail ones to start with.
You can use the free google keyword search tool to get an idea.
    Hope this helps.

First of all you consider, your site on page factors before building backlinks.
Get links from relevant and high authoritative domains.
Analyze your competitor and try to get links from where he placed his link.

By following these steps you can improve your site rankings..

I have a site on first page of Google for about 8 keywords. What I did is find 26 keywords that are popular, but low to moderate competition, then I used six of them for articles on the blog. After that I spun the other 20 articles into 15 articles a piece and marketed them to article directories.

This took me a couple of weeks because I don't use an auto submitter program. However, it seemed to work for my tax site.

I don't know for sure if that is the fastest or easiest way to do it, but it worked for me. I am open to faster ways if anyone wants to share

    • Wow, nice website first up.
What keywords are you trying to rank for? Essentially what you want to make sure is that your on-page SEO is spot on: Keywords in title, url, heading, description and around 3% density. Then build quality backlinks to the site using the keywords in the anchor text. That's essentially all you need to do. Keep at it, it will pay off eventually.
