I was wondering if anyone has had luck marketing products by targeting low volume keywords? I have found a lot of good keywords that have anywhere from 350 -600 exact match searches per month. Many still have exact match TLDs available. Is it worth pursuing keywords with lower search volume? I have noticed that many of these keywords have a ton of ads being displayed in Google which seems to be a good sign.

Welcome to the world of "micro-niche-marketing."

It's a really great way to make money just be aware of that the costs for buying a domain name for every "long tail keyword" you find can prove to be expensive.

Are you looking to profit solely from adsense or monetize in other methods as well? Also for future reference these kinds of questions generally should go in the SEO forum...

Low volume keywords have always been kinda hit or miss with me. I tend to not target anything bleow 800 exact matches. If I thought it would be a good buying keyword I would probably go after it.

If I was going to go after keywords with less than 800 exact matches I would defintely make sure there is low competition. I wouldnt want to compete with wiki ehow or any other major site.

Exact match domains get de-valued a lot in Google now adays. Micro-sites are (in my opinion) not such a good bet now adays.

However, if you can find maybe 25+ promising keywords which are all related, you can build one big site, full of nice content and all those bits of traffic will add up...

And yes, I have done this, and it can work very well. You'll need to write plenty and make your site really good quality, and then you'll need to build lots of links.

Do you have any statistical numbers to prove this? None of my EMD's have been de-valued and I've been building sites this way since I started a few years ago.

Even in the "farmer" update my sites actually moved UP the SERPs not down.

  • In my experience you can definitely have success with this. A lot of people say don't go for anything under 1,000 a month. I also operate by this rule, but only because if I am going to take the time to rank for a keyword, it may as well be something that gets lots of traffic.

On the other hand....it really is all about how targeted your traffic is.
I would rather get 50 highly targeted visitors a month than 10,000 visitors from untargeted traffic. So if the keyword in question is a 'buying keyword' and will be searched by people who are really looking for what your site is offering, I say GO FOR IT!

I typically stay above 500 on exact match keywords. If the keywords are buyers keywords and a good domain is available, chances are that is a good one to go after.

How do you judge 'buying keywords'? Since the AdLabs from MSN has taken down their site, I don' know how to judge this other than for the obvious ones.

Those are some of the best (most successful) Amazon or other physical product pages and sites I have.

Low searches, low comp review sites do well because they are already in a buying mind-set.

    Good luck.

it all depends on the nature of the niche...

if i find a word with 300 searches per month for the word free shoelace knot guide... i may pass it up.

however if its something like mortgage refinance in new mexico... id probably go for that.

as a marketer you want to look for how much you can make on a niche vs the traffic available... that will give you the sweet money spot.

If you can find well-matched offer for those microniches, you can make big cash with them. Just make sure you can make a highly converated landing page for each keyword.
