Hubspot advice on SEO

Is anyone farmiliar with Hupspot? I was on an SEO webinar they gave recently that gave the following advice for creating high ranking for a keyword:
"Write a good, highly keyword optimized blog post that contains links to the product page, then create back links to the blog post. The blog post will get indexed higher and faster, because it has fresh content. The Call To Action and links on the blog post will generate the traffic to the product page for the sale."
Does this seem right to people? I always thought the idea was to build the back links directly to the product page to generate the high SEO rankings for it.

Any thoughts?
