Tips on getting traffic with WordPress themes and plugins

Hi,

I have a couple of sites where I release free WordPress themes and plugins to gain website traffic and links. I thought I'd write down some of my tips for anyone who is interested in this. Also, I'd be keen to hear tips from anyone else who does this.

1. Release the theme/plugin ASAP. Don't worry about getting it perfect as you can update it later and get more traffic.

2. Submit the plugin/theme URL to relevant webmaster and WP forums.

3. Submit to Weblog Tools Collection news forum.

4. Submit to Weblog Tools Collection news submission. This requires emailing the editors.

5. If you have a plugin, submit it for SVN access at wordpress.org. It will then appear in the catalog and on a few Wordpress subdomains in latest plugins, etc..

This should start bringing in traffic. Especially when your theme or plugin is published on the Weblog Tools Collection blog.

Now, you can start updating your plugin when you start getting feedback or you just think of extra stuff to put into it:

1. Bump the threads on the webmaster and WP forums that you submitted to.

2. Create a new release of your plugin in wordpress SVN.

3. Submit the update to news on Weblog Tools Collection blog.

Also, remember to put links back to your site within your theme and plugin. If you have options pages (and I can't think of a reason not to), don't forget to put links on them. And remember, to not make the links spammy in your free themes and plugins as this won't sit too well with the WP community.

Do you guys have any other tips?
