even if the articles are indexed if it does not rank you will still not get traffic. You have to build some backlinks to your articles

Promote your articles just as you would promote your website. Build backlinks to them, write more articles linking to your first articles. Write blog posts and link to your articles. Create a Squidoo lens and a Hubpage and link to your articles.

It is no different than trying to get traffic to your own website, you need to promote your articles to get them ranking and receiving visitors.

"Rumpleteazer", "Heavenstorm", and "Sheryl" are completely correct. You have to SEO your articles as well.

Another thing that you have to do is make sure that the title of your article is compelling to a targeted audience. If it is not compelling to a targeted audience, there will be no interest. Someone who sees the title of your article must immediately be able to see that they will gain something by clicking on your article, and reading it.

Very good point too Brian - the title needs to grab a persons attention and make them want to read your article!

I'm absolutely dismayed to see so many people advising someone that building backlinks to articles in article directories is a sensible, viable or productive way to build a business.

      It just isn't.

It's an extremely and fundamentally misguided approach typical of those who spend a year struggling with what they wrongly imagine to be "article marketing" and then either disappear or (even worse) come back and start off threads "explaining" that article marketing doesn't work any more, the reality being that the way they've been trying to do it hasn't worked for many years.

The idea of article marketing is to build up your own website, not other people's sites.

Backlinking to a copy of an article in another directory is - in the long run - a huge mistake.

The only way article directory copies of articles are going to outrank your own site, in the long-term, is if you build backlinks to them. Once this is done, then "the damage is done" and it's going to be difficult - maybe very difficult indeed - for your own site to outrank even an article directory.

The trap into which people commonly fall is to see a directory copy of an article doing better in the SERP's (though maybe not so much, now, since Google's recent changes which were so helpful to article marketers) and imagine that that makes it a good idea to build backlinks to a directory copy. It isn't at all, though: it's a really short-sighted blunder. It simply perpetuates the problem rather than gradually resolving it, and means you end up with a site that can't outrank an article directory, and that you're effectively sending your traffic (i.e. produced indirectly by your backlinking) to article directories instead of getting it from article directories.

      It's "the descending ceiling".

As explained in such detail here, here, here, here, here, here and so on ... all good and helpful threads to read, I hope.

The best way is to do social bookmarking. This will help your article to get indexed.
