What's more important: marketing or product?

Hi everyone, new to the forum.

I'm just curious to hear from experienced internet marketers (those who sell tangible products) what you think is more important between marketing and product sourcing.

Also, are there forums where people with these different skill sets can meet and potentially pair up?

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Great question! In my opinion I think marketing, more importantly SEO. It really doesn't matter what you are selling on your site, if you can get the right people to see it (I.e. people who want to buy it) you will make sales.

All you have to do is feed the hungry crowd. If someone does a search for something in Google, and your site comes up at the top and offers them what they are looking for, you are going to make sales.

Of course the product does need to be semi-decent, but I think the key to internet marketing is just getting your website in front of the people who want to see it.

I think they are equally important, because if you don't have a product and you market, you wont make any money (obviously). From the other end: if you don't market your product then you wont make money either. So both of them are the basis of your earnings.

Thanks for the replies! I agree that both are quite important. I've actually been living in China for the past couple of years and now work for a sourcing company. Probably off topic, but the sheer number of wholesalers in China for all sorts of products is just breathtaking (I highly recommend anyone who has the chance to come and visit). So I have some experience and understanding as it relates to product sourcing.

But I only understand internet marketing on a conceptual level, i.e. not applicable. I've toyed with the idea of truly learning internet marketing, but I'm not sure if trying to do everything on my own makes the most sense. That's why I'm curious if there are forums available to connect internet marketers with product sourcers.

As internet marketers, yourselves, do you find product sourcing to be much of an issue?

Anyway, I certainly appreciate your thoughts -- I suppose no one ever said being an entrepreneur was easy.

      Hi,

I have a few things to say.

First, I agree that both are very important. Kind of like the song "Love and Marriage" - you can't have one without the other! I know some of you younguns are sitting there saying "what is she talking about??"

You need to have a product and a good quality one, unless you don't care about repeat customers:-) Of course, we need to all care about that. If you offer a product that isn't good quality, you will have refunds and no repeat business.

Once you have the product, you need to get it out there and let others know about it.

If you don't want to write the product yourself, you can do a joint venture with someone who has the writing skills and you could do the marketing. Or vice versa.

Or...you can hire someone to write it for you - check Elance.

Both are important, but marketing is more important than product. A perfect product won't sell without proper marketing, and an experience marketer can promote any junk product.

I think marketing is more important than products. Success depends on marketing technique. Every product have customer and the most important is to find out those people. And this is the duty of marketing department. If you have a strong technique of marketing then you will get success in your IM.

For me they are both important. A good marketing skills without product is useless, and a good product without marketing skills is still useless. So the bottom line is, both are important.

I think marketing is more important than the product.. Without any good marketing strategies, a product can't reach the customers.
