I was doing some keyword analysis on Traffic Travis and one of the stat columns is labeled H1 Tag.

What exactly is an H1 tag?

I did a search on Google but some of the definitions were kinda confusing. I thought someone here can simplify it it for me.

Thanks

This is your heading tag in html

If you were to write an article or blog post, the title would be inside the <h1> tags. Not to be confused with page title which is the title in the top left hand corner of the html page.

If you were to write an article on, for example, Psychic Dogs you'll put the blog post title in <h1> tags like this:

    Code:
<h1>The Rise In Psychic Dogs Means You're Out Of Job Mr. Fry</h1>
It is important for SEO reasons you have your main keywords in your <h1> tags.

It's the HTML tag that designates the text between the tags as the "heading" or "Headline" of the page/article you are creating. The number next to the 'H' signifies how large your heading is, H1 being the largest (font) size.

This is a really simplified explanation.... might want to read up HTML coding for a more detailed description.

So say I'm writing a post on wp and where I type in the title for the post I also type in the <h1> code?

      For example I would type... <h1>My Title</h1>

Sportsfan, if you are using WP the title of the page will be done for you by wp, but the headline, down where you are going to put your article will need a H1 tag. Over on the left side of the dashboard there will be a box with different formats, like paragraph, h1, h2, etc. Just highlight your headline and hit which size of type you want.

Ahhh I see now. Thanks, makes sense now

When I was selecting the different headings I find that the h1 ext is way to big for me. Do I need to use the H1 or can I use H2 or H3 instead?

          Does it matter to Google?

How about other search engines? Do they also auto-format them?

As far as I know, there are only six (6) header tags used to define a heading that we can attach to our HTML documents. <h1> being the main heading, meaning the most important among the rest of the headings, and has the largest visibility of font size while <h6> defines the least important heading.

A H1 Tag is just known as a Header marker.

It tells the browser and more importantly robots / spiders reading HTML code that what is between the tags is of the utmost importance to this page.

While the Title and description tags determine what the search engines show browsers the H1 tags are very important in what is known as on page optimization .

So what you have in between the tags <h1>xx</h1> is very important to making the page rank in the SERPs.

Is H1 is useful, that mean don't need H2 or H3, right?

h1, h2, and h3 tags can be helpful. H4 and thereafter are questionable. Depends on the content and how they are used. The first three I have the best luck with. No harm in testing them and trying them out that is for sure, as long as they are not abused or over used.
