SEO - Web 2.0 Links vs. Prior Web 2.0 Links

Hi, it just occured to me, that to freaking beat wikipedia is nearly impossible. but in the process, with my limited seo experience and education i considered there following:
is there a different between Web 2.0 Links and those prior to Web 2.0?
I am assuming most wiki's atleast for the content that I research (chess guru's) should be outdated or not have many web 2.0 links.
Whats the take on this?
am I all Bologne or Salchichonee?
