Do I have time for SEO?

I have been studying up on SEO for about a month now. I have had maybe an hour a day to do so. I work a full 40 hours a week, have a newborn son, I want to learn PHP and Magento, and build a few websites.

I would love to save myself money (and gain personal knowledge) by doing my own SEO. But with this list of time expenses,

Would you recommend I forget about SEO and hire somebody to do that for me? Or should I keep pursuing it and keep on learning while slowing down everthing else?

Learn it, I would say, if you have the time. It's not rocket surgery but it takes time. If you don't have that much time, and you can afford to outsource it, do that instead. It will save you time to work on quality content instead.

You should really plan out what you are going to do. Make yourself a schedule!

If you push yourself in too many directions you will get discouraged. You should really have a set time allocated to the task's you want to complete.

I would suggest that you learn it by yourself. SEO is long process though, you don't have to rush everything. All things shall fall in the right place, so don't make it hard for yourself. Just enjoy what you are doing.

I would say rather than outsourcing, invest in some SEO software to speed up some processes.

BULLSEYE!! Right on Target!! Without software you cannot possibly keep up or get anywhere fast enough to make any real money. Google updates their state of the art software programs weekly - the same day and time every single week!

You will NOT stay on page one using what you learn. Nobody will unless they first optimize their entire website, page by page. Your pages have to convert and stand on their own to be relevant to Google's software or they won't be indexed. They will be ignored and you don't want that.

http://www.ez-1.net/rank <--If you don't rank, you don't pay. But first, they will tell you what you need to correct so you CAN rank and stay there long term with only maintenance that won't cost more than a small fraction of your sales.

SEO is very time consuming. For the proper results and not to get black listed it is best that you hire a well-known SEO company.

I read the beginner's guide at SEOMoz, SEO in an Hour a Day(book, good) and a few others things like sphinn (seo blog) and of course the WF. DigPoint too. I agree with the others, learn, understand do some yourself, outsource the rest.

Do yourself a favor and look at CMS, like Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal. I love WP and you will too.

Setup a wordpress blog and install "all in one seo" from the plugins. This plugin alone will help your site tremendously.

If you don't already know php - I wouldn't recommend learning how to program. Unless your a genius - it will take you ages - and someone else will probably do a better job. If you have a good idea, just pay someone to develop your website.

SEO on the other hand is essentially easy but a bit laborious.

I would be happy to give you a free quote for your web development if you are interested - I think you would be very surprised with the price. We do custom database driven sites from £500 - to about £4000 on average depending on complexity. Check out inowebdesign.net We also do SEO but I've already told you that's easy and you can do it yourself!

Also, it depends on what words you are going after and the competition. Once you develop a routine, you may only have to invest a few hrs a week to rank and maintain that ranking. Or, if it is real competitive, it may require 20 hrs a week intially for a few months to rank. The only way is to try first, then make the decision if it is worthy of your time.

  • You should always invest in your competencies and outsource everything else. Unless you just want to learn for the sake of learning.

It's kind of like hiring a mechanic though. If you know about cars then you will know when someone is trying to cheat you. Same with SEO... you need to know enough to know that people you hire are doing what needs to be done.

Spend time learning SEO - ABSOLUTELY, this will also include spending some cash on some good services and training programs but will really help you in the long run.

Spend time learning how to program etc... - Not so much. Unless you just really dig that aspect of it, then by all means go for it, but it probably will end up as more of a labor of love than advancing your income as quickly as SEO.

But basically, find what you enjoy out of the process and go with it.

SEO can be a whole lot of fun (if you're a little twisted anyways), and the payoffs can be great!

In your situation, you cannot learn SEO in a short period of time. But that's not the reason for you to stop learning SEO. You can still study about it when you have extra time. Take it slow so that you can learn and understand well.

That's why most men who take charge "KNOW" everything. Most CEO's and all Politicians act "as if" they really do. The problem is when they forget they're just acting and start believing they do know everything. Leaders rule the World and just look at the results!!

SEO experts are educated in Computer Science, Software development, IT Engineering with at least a background in Programming. Thinking like a computer using logic and knowing how to use software is not self-taught and now, thanks to Google, you don't need all that to rank anymore.

Google uses technology to do the exact opposite now. Machines are programmed with logic to think more and more like humans and people don't realize that yet. SEO was for machines that don't exist anymore.

Professional Fun-Havers with common sense are SEO Experts that get results now, especially

Do some research online, use free tools, read a few good ebooks, use this forum, and do it all in your free time because it will definitely pay off in the end. Do not just abandon your life for SEO, but take a few hours out of your available time to learn it.
