Hello folks hope you are all in fine fettle!

I'm just starting my journey into internet marketing and purchased Market Samurai last night although from some of the posts I've read on the forum it seems to be undergoing some 'issues' at the moment. A number of hardened MS fans seem really down on the product at the moment. Has it literally become a bad product overnight?

I digress somewhat. Since purchasing the software I've naturally been playing around with it a bit. I've watched a number of tutorial videos that initially I was pretty impressed with but many of them seem out of date with the version of the software I've got.

I'm still digressing. In the videos the trainer suggests a max SEOC value of 30,000 which is obviously to ensure that there's not too much competition in a particular niche. The problem is that no matter what keywords I enter in, all the competion seems WAY above this so I end up with no keywords after I've applied the filter.

Have I simply been unlucky and typed in a number of mega popular keywords or is there a problem here? I went through the 'dog training' example keyword that the trainer suggested in the video but when I applied the 30,000 keyword competition filter, all the keywords disappeared because the competition was miles higher for ALL they keywords.

Taking away the REFRESH button is confusing. I'm having problems establishing when the data on the screen is actually 'current'.

Thanks guys. I'd be really interested in your comments on my points above and on Market Samurai in general.

Many thanks
Yellowcake

I use market samurai as a supplement to my keyword research. Think about how many people use it and google keyword tool.

You need to think outside of the box when getting your keywords. there are many other places that you can scout for keywords.

There are also other programs that will find keywords without using the google keyword tool. I dont use market samurai to find my keywords, I use it to check all the other factors.

      Hello ALL..

I've been using market samurai for about two weeks now and so far I really like it. I'm still learning the ways of the 'samurai' and all it features but, I'll get there.

hashbury made a good point - "To use market samurai as a supplement to the keyword research and to think outside of the box when getting your keywords"

Can you imagine how many people would own market samurai if it could solved ALL the research problems. I would buy stock..!

Thanks for the replies guys. What do you think of the 30,000 SEOC filter value? I know it's nigh on impossible to set a 'reasonable competition' value because it'll depend on the niche but what do you folks use as as a benchmark? I've heard everthing from 30,000 to 70,000 is OK on this one.

Be sure to check the other filters you have applied since that could limit your results. Where it says "Preset:" you can set that to no filters and that should give you the most keywords back. Also, you can connect Market Samurai to an adwords account and it should return up to 800 keywords.

As for the accuracy, they are pulling stats from search results so it should be accurate. The only thing that can throw it off is that google returns different search results for different people. So, you and I can type the same keyword into a search but receive slightly different search results since Google tracks our search usage and sees our interests differently. That has more to do with Google than Market Samurai, but I wonder if they pull the top ten from a central source or from the users computer (in which case the top 10 would vary from person to person).

Do you know if the rankings for the top 10 website on page 1 in Google are accurate in Market Samurai?

Market Samurai has indeed had some issues lately, but it seems to me that they are getting things back under control.

I have never had doubts about the accuracy of their data, though - only annoyances when things didn't work properly.

People keep talking abotu how MS is used for great keyword reseach and analysis of competition, however it has OTHER functions....which are great!

Every module in there has a great function.

My personal favorite is the promotion - I find dozens of high PR backlinks in less than 60 seconds....

MArket Samurai is the best keyword research tool available. In my opinion, it has no equal. It will take a bit of time to find your way around if you are new to the game of keyword research, but once it 'clicks' you are on your way!

In reality, Yellowcake, SEOC (or "number of competitors") is largely irrelevant.

You might have an SEOC number of 30,000,000, but if the the first page SERPs results are all weak (in terms of low-PR, little to no on-site keyword optimisation and few/weak backlinks), then you'll not have any problems outranking them.

Conversely, you might have an SEOC of 300, but all of the top-ranking sites may be exceedingly strong in terms of both on-site and off-site SEO and overall domain authority. You'll struggle to outrank them.

So really, SEOC numbers are not something you should be using to judge the suitability of a keyword phrase. Always analyze the strength of competition - not just the amount of competition.

Enjoy MS. For all its recent hiccups, it's still my favourite keyword tool, by far.
