Ranking domestically vs internationally?

Hi Guys,
I am located outside of the USA. When I do a keyword search in quotes on a niche I am looking into, I get 500,000+ results. But google gives preference to the sources in my country first, and on the first page are some sites I believe I can EASILY outrank. On the flip side, if I do the search in google.com, the first page results would be VERY hard to outrank.
So I am interested in any feedback people can provide me regarding ranking domestically vs internationally. Obviously the domestic traffic for these keywords is much lower, thus the easier of getting onto first page, but if I wanted to focus on domestic market first (physical product), then international second, how do I go about this? I own the .com (international) and the .com.X (domestic) domains.
