What is Social Book Marking?

I am a newbie with no experience what soever. I am focusing all my attention on learning to market through Facebook. Any tips or tricks that you guys know of that you can suggest would be awesome, but my main question here is What is social bookmarking and how is it used? I would also like to know how you use twitter and facebook together to target your specific niche. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Social bookmarking site is a place you can share great websites/posts with others.
When you want to share a website or an article with others, just provide the url address of the website/post, some description of the website/post, category(what's the kind of the website/post) and keywords.

When you submit your sharing, your sharing will display. Other visitors can see your sharing and visit it, if they think it is great, they can vote it.

Additionally, you can find valued website/article from social bookmarking site shared by other visitors. Then you can communicate with each other in social bookmarking site.

Some famous social bookmarking site like Digg.com, reddit.com, stumbleupon.com, etc
You can register one and have a try. It is a way to promote your website/blog.

  In a day we come across numerous sites on web out of which few may be catchy to us. Usually we add these web page links to our local system which we call as Bookmark/Favorites. We can be able to quickly get back to it later.
  
  But when we wish to share our favorite links to expose it globally among other people of same interest. Then there comes a role of social bookmarking in the web. When you bookmark your site online to any online community, your favorite sites are now getting visible to all in the world.
  
  Social bookmarking is nothing but it is a way to publicly share and organize your favorite links, stories, posts, website, blog’s and tagging them with keywords for sharing with others on web.

  Nah, you bots and newbies is all wrong! It's when you put on a clown suit, stand in front of a busy book shop and pass out free bookmarks to all the avid readers who go in and out of the book store. Got nothin' to do with links or anything...

We use social bookmarking if we want to share something. Most often, we share something interesting that will attract visitors to our site. Social bookmarking is one of the best ways to promote our site or its content.

  I understand what social bookmarking is all about. But I question the link value.. or maybe Im just doing it wrong.. Have boomarked a number of my sites an numerous high PR social sites.. but do not see any evidence of backlinks.. Is the value of these social sites just for traffic?

It is very helpful in means of getting traffic. You can get sort of targeted visits from Social bookmarking sites. The main thing is that it really helps in gaining traffic and help you in getting indexed.

Twitter and facebook are the most famous SMO websites with huge traffic. To promote your business/website over twitter and facebook you need to build a good network of friends/followers on these two sites. Social bookmarking is also good for traffic increase. Some popular bookmarking sites are stumbleupon, digg, delicious, reddit etc.

  Well I have a number of bookmarks on a number of high PR sites for about 4 weeks and no back links.. nothing.. Thats why I question there back link value
