I know that we are supposed to be backlinking from relevant forums - but let me tell you something. I've tried backlinking from anything but relevant forums and having some pretty good success. I have also been mixing it up a little w/ writing articles and putting it on hubpages and PRLog.

Anyone else been having the same success???

    I think I would agree...

I am involved in the "non-relevant"/semi-relevant forums simply because they interest me.. so I think it is more natural that way... and that is what white hat is all about, no?

I'm exactly the same. You might have a website selling a dog training books, but that doesn't mean you're interested in dogs. I try to get my blog backlinks etc from SEO websites that I am interested in. That way I don't mind reading the article first before I comment.

Of course. Forum profile links are my primary linkbuilding tactic.

Yes, non-relevant forum links are still great for SEO. Relevant ones are just a little better.

The success ratio only depends upon the relevant traffic and more traffic. You can try loads of things, but the ones which are successful get that work translated into tangible results.

I really don't understand half the responses in this thread (at least one proves my point below), but thanks for the post - I wonder how overrated 'relevant backlinks' are. The spammers certainly must think they are, that's why they come to WF and post rubbish just to spam their sig links. I haven't tested your idea though. If I go to my favourite mountain-biking forum, I am not sure what the mods are going to think of my 'Best grill review' sig link

It's always good to mix it up with both.

I only have backlink from non relevant sites and it does help to bring traffic and google indexing my blog but I am sure it does not help in Page rank (at least in my case).

See, Back linking is totally off page technique. All you need is to understand the basic theme behind this, That is to make your link distributed to as much site as you can so that Search engine will treat that link is very much popular. But if it will be a relevant then traffic on your site may come through this site that may not be in case of irrelevant sites.

You will always get away with having a certain percentage of non-relevant links to help you boost your sites but as soon as it starts to go over say 20% of non-relevant backlinks Google will start to smell it!
