      • My thoughts on this...if you have a burning inkling to try this, GO FOR IT!

What I would suggest though is treat it as a side/pet project. Have some less competitive keyword sites on the go as well for quicker results, and keep this one as you hobby. If you never rank well for it, who cares. It's a great goal to go for, and imagine the WSO you could sell if you pulled it off

        • I agree and disagree with the posters above me: Yes, you can go for more targeted subniches (and will have a way easier time to rank for MMO longtails, the rankings will come a lot faster as well) but then you also will be limited in regards to traffic.

With a high-traffic term like "make money online" you can build a huge list in a short time and use that list to educate them about all the facets of making money online. So they go from broad, pretty untargeted traffic, to targeted, presold traffic that has a relationship with you.

With that being said, it does make sense to target terms like this. If you should do it or not is entirely a budget question. I quoted someone in the past $7500 for a guaranteed first page ranking for "make money online" (5-6 months). If that is within your range we can talk but don't expect to get a first page ranking cheaper somewhere else, even if you read sometimes outrageous guaranteed ranking claims (for $59 or whatever the ridiculous price tag is for a "guaranteed" first page ranking).

If you made $$ at position #70, why wouldn't you think you would make the same if not more between position #1 & #69?

Did you make any $$ at #70, with the clicks you already had?

I would say it is worth it, especially if you are working on other kw too. Keep working on the others and gradually work your way up for that one at the same time. Progress might be slow but it will be worth moving up a bit at a time.

No, because that keyword phrase is not targeted enough. There are sooo many ways to make money online. The more targeted your keyword phrase is the better (that is if you have something to sell).

if you really wanna have a go in the mmo niche, think of it as a long term project. It will take quite some time to reach page 1 but if you have the determination I will say go for it and make it into an authority site

Make money online can be a tricky one. Just to target the term I would say no, especially if you are looking to do something quickly. I agree with what the others have said about targeting a sub niche.

My experience was getting sucked in to all the quick dollars I thought I would be able to make in the niche because it is very lucrative as far as making money. However, I did not have all the tools or learning at that point to know how to approach it correctly. I suggest waiting if you are still in the learning curve.

SEO is most definitely not overrated because regardless of things Google has done in the past to slap some of us, it is still the way you are going to get indexed and climb the ranks. Understanding SEO can mean the difference between a page 1 ranking and page 100 ranking. Best of luck!

If you're willing to put in a year+ worth of consistent work, then yes. It'll pay for itself in dividends if you can stick with it.

I have seen more than a few horror stories from people using so called SEO experts. So if you are going to hire one....check them out thoroughly. Because you may not get what you pay for and you won't get your money back.

If you are going to be an Internet marketer...you really need to learn SEO.

Plus...just getting on page one does not guarantee you an income. You need to have a great product to offer your visitors.

like i said i had 30 clicks for make money online and if i didnt mess up with my domain name, i think i wud get a bit more.

How much traffic do you get at your current position?

Usually, you need to be on Page 1 (positions 1-10) to see any significant traffic for a keyword phrase, but - naturally - the more searches a keyword phrase commands, the more traffic you can expect to receive even with much lower rankings than that. Basically, the volume of traffic you can expect to see is somewhat proportional to the total number of searches ... but, clearly, if many of the higher ranking sites/pages are halfway decent, content-wise (which in itself is somewhat subjective, I guess), many people may not feel the need to keep looking past them.

"make money online" is one majorly tough keyword phrase and, as Mike rightly says, it'd likely take many months (or over a year) of consistent backlinking to break into any of the higher positions. And that's if you know exactly what you're doing. If you'd be paying someone else to do the work, expect it to be very expensive.

Whether the financial outlay would be worth it to you is something you need to consider. And it's hard to consider it when you cannot say for certain how long it'll take, whether you'll actually get there at all, or how much traffic you'll actually receive once you make it (and, indeed, how well you're able to monetise that traffic).

Not if you're aiming to get significant traffic from search-engines - especially for competitive keyword phrases - no. It's pretty much a necessity.

On the whole, I wouldn't recommend this. There have to be other, less competitive keywords you can target (even related to "make money online" and/or internet marketing)?

It'd be quite a costly endeavour, I think, and would probably entail some significant risk. Do you really want to burden yourself with this - especially since you've just confessed that you don't really know what you're doing?

If you wouldn't know how to do it yourself, how are you able to properly oversee the work anyone else does for you? How could you be sure that your money is being well spent, and that they aren't "diddling you around"?

but isnt seo a small amount of total traffic of the web? i doubt im gonna get 100, 000 page views per month just because of seo. I think building strong backlinks would help!

Well, SEO in and of itself isn't traffic - it's just a process you go through to increase your chances of generating search-engine traffic. And don't forget that no matter where you're receiving traffic from, a lot of it - at least initially - originated from a search-engine.

If you were ranking highly - due to the implementation of an SEO campaign - for a keyword phrase (or numerous phrases, when combined) that commanded that volume of searches, then you would. But the question is, will you rank? And in the case of many of the keywords you've listed above - "make money online" and its derivative/related terms - you will certainly not rank without a lot of work, over a long period of time. And it's probably just not advisable to try until you're very clued up about the process of SEO, and can at least effectively orchestrate and oversee the work done on your behalf by others; otherwise you'll risk pumping exuberant quantities of cash into what could effectively just be a black hole of doom, and may never see a return substantial enough that it would justify your expenditure.

Undoubtedly. But backlink-building is an integral part of SEO; as a process, SEO isn't just limited to on-site/on-page optimisation. In fact, on-site optimisation is the smallest part of the equation.

But just know that your ranking on Page-7 - or wherever you happen to be right now - isn't an indication that you'd only have to build a "few more backlinks" to climb the ladder onto the next page, or even the next spot. What few (if any) backlinks might've got you into this position, may need to be multiplied in volume by hundreds, thousands or hundreds of thousands (if not millions - depending on the overall quality of the backlinks you manage to acquire/build) before you'll see any significant shift toward the higher positions and a considerable increase in traffic.

I doesn't wish to sound in any way like I'm challenging your decisions (well, I suppose I am, but not an negatively confrontational manner - just in a helpful way), but why are you so set on ranking for what are likely to be some of the most highly competitive and hard-to-rank-for keyword phrases, when there are so many (countless!) others that you could rank for far more quickly, far more easily, and with far less expenditure than what this endeavour would require of you, and would see you making money much more quickly? To say you'd be "jumping in at the deep end" would be quite a gross understatement, here.

Believe me, the prospect of ranking highly for these sorts of phrases is appealing to many - myself included - but just ask yourself why even those with more SEO experience aren't channeling their efforts into doing just this? The answer is because it's still a terribly difficult and potentially risky endeavour.

Sure, go for it. You're getting traffic with a pretty low ranking as it is. So imagine if you could jump up just 20 or 30 spots. You may never hit page 1. But even pages 2,3,4 can bring in a lot of traffic for such a high volume search term.

The issue of getting there is one thing, it will be the maintenance of staying there being your 2nd main issue, better you concentrate on longer tail or less competitive keywords which still have good search trends.

How are you checking the ranking? I checked on seoserp.com and you're not in the top 1000 for 'make money online'.

Nope, just found it on page 9 at the moment. Seoserp.com gives some odd results sometimes. Being in the top 10 pages with minimal backlinks for such a competitive term is actually quite a good result. You may as well keep going for it but see it as a long term project rather than some quick buck scheme.
