Google Keyword / Backlinking... "Does the 'S' Matter?"

Hey Warriors,

So I have a question about how Google ranks its searches...

I'm about to start building backlinks for my new site (probably by buying from different Warriors) and I was wondering if it would be better to include the "S" or not in my keyword.

For example, I want to rank for the keywords "Digital Nomad" and "Digital Nomads" so can I just submit backlinks with the keyword "Digital Nomads" since they are both practically the same beside the 's'?

So for example, when people google it either with or without the 's' I want my site to be on top for both... Just wondering if this matters or not before I spend a lot of money on here building links...

Appreciate the help!

So in that scenario you can just build links for one keyword, in this example "digital nomadS" with the 'S' and both search terms with/without the 's' should work with the site?

    Appreciate the test you did

Seems to be going that way for me. I actually mix it up,with and with out the S.

Yeah good point Williampaul, I suppose it works in many different cases but I'd love to hear some other Warriors opinions/experience...

Here is what I would check...

    1) How many exact match searches for "digital nomads" (plural)
    2) How many exact match searches for "digital nomad" (singular)
    3) How strong is the serps competition for "digital nomads" (plural)
    4) How strong is the serps competition for "digital nomad" (singular)

That will tell you which to focus more attention (and anchor links) on.

Then do both, but with 60/40 or 70/30 using more of the one that's a better choice.

I would like to know the answer as well. Search result for word with or without the "s" is not exactly the same.
Or should we check the monthly searches for both words and put more weight on the one with higher searches?

I think it does make a difference - your search term is quite unique but if you had more competition i think the pluralisation optimisation does take effect. Also in adwords it counts it as 2 different phrases. I have done some checks befor on SERPS in the past and have found it does make quite a big difference. Eg Kitchen - kitchens were quite different.

    • I found the sites ranking top 5 for my keyword are all the same, so it doesn't seem like it's really worth worrying about. I think if you have excellent on-page SEO with some powerful backlinks, you should dominate them both.

Ok my question is similar but instead of involving the letter "s" it involves the word "in"

so if i build backlinks for:

    product "in" city state

will I also rank for the term

    product city state

    without the "in"?

I would use both, google can tell if something is plural or singular and it is best to keep a natural set of anchors. You don't want all your keywords to just be "Digital Nomads" Google will know something is up. Always switch it around. For example, lets say I have a site called buyxbox360.com

    Anchors could be
    buy xbox 360
    buy xbox
    purchase xbox 360
    xbox 360 reviews
    xbox 360 review
    xbox review
    purchase xbox
click here (a very natural anchor which can be used for most sites)

Obviously you would focus on your main term "buy xbox 360", but you should build a few links with other terms as well.
