Any way to save my rankings?

hello there, I have been in a tricky situation. My sites are bitten by a worm that can't be cleaned. So I am left with the option of reinstalling things from scratch, but doing so will get me to loose my rankings because I have made backlinks to the category pages.

Further those category pages have unique variables given by software that will be different the next time I create the sites, so in the eyes of google it will be a different page from the one I backlinked.

I am so confused?

    Before you start over, contact your hosting company tech support. Ask them if you can pay a fee to restore your site from a backup previous to the worm. If they can do that, you won't have to restore from scratch.

    Then, go to archive.org and see if they have copies of any of the content posted between the restore and the infection. Check Google cache, too. You may be able to copy/paste any missing content.

    It's some work, but it's a shot at keeping your rankings.

    And when it's all done -- remember to make a backup every week so if it ever happens again, you have a backup to restore.

      The backup they have is also infected. BTW, what do you think about 301 redirect will it help?

        Gah - that sucks! Can you recreate the exact same structure if you use archive.org to find the exact urls?

        If not, yes 301 will help. What I suggest is 301 all the urls or as many as you can. Then, at the same time, go get some high-authority links to the main page. That will also help prevent the rankings from sliding.

        It will wobble a little, but when you see the new pages first ranked, keep building high trust links until your rankings are back where they were.

            Depends on your niche. For example, if you're business related, look for business magazines (ie print magazines) that accept online articles and offer a sig file link.

            Or, search google for your most relevant keyword. Ideally not long tail, but closer to the high competition terms. Look to see who ranks at the top.

            First check to see if the top ranked sites have a directory or accept content submissions or guest posts.

            Then, also paste the top ranked sites into backlinkwatch.com and get a list of their backlinks -- see if you can find some high PR sites that accept content submissions or guest posts or have directories you can submit to.

            Basically, you're looking for high PR sites related to your site that you can get links from.

            And don't forget to use social media bookmarking on the new urls after you do the 301.
