So, first off I'd like to say this looks like a really nice forum! I hope to learn a lot from you guys.
I've been wondering about something for a while, as I look through domain names and see sometimes that .com is taken but .org or .net aren't.... what's the difference really in terms of SEO? Does google treat a .com better? What are your experiences?
Thanks!

Google doesn't treat any of the generic TLDs any different in terms of SEO. In terms of branding, a .com is usually better to have, even if you only redirect it to another extension.

When you start getting into country code TLDs, Google will place more weight on ranking locally than it will globally as a whole. So, stick with generic TLDs unless you specifically intend to target a particular local market.

      ^^ I agree 110% with this.

I can see why buying the other exts would be a good investment. sounds like .net is the next logical choice. particularly I hope to build the site where my members consider it an association.

I like .com, don't mind .net, but kind of detest .org.

When I see a site like "curecoldsoresnow.org" I laugh...it just looks so ridiculous to me.

Still, what I think doesn't matter - it's all about the Goog, and they seem to offer little preference to any of these TLDs.

There's really no difference when it comes to ranking the different TLDs, but I do see your point - it's a little absurd for some sites (especially of a commercial nature) to have a .org TLD. It just doesn't fit, but that doesn't mean it can't rank for the term!

Probably .com will be easy to handle for your purpose and .org and .edu the search engine will give more importance for this.

And for the SEO term the last I have mentioned two domains are needed for the ranking position.

I always choose .com first because it generates money for me only

Cool seems like the consensus is that they rank equally for SEO but that .com looks the best. That's pretty much what I figured, just wanted to be sure that if I see a .net or something for a big keyword it really is a good find =D

I would rather go for an alternative domain with a hypen rather than go for a dot net domain. Im not against other TLDs though, but most of the people's mind set is that websites ends with a com.

In the long run there is no difference from the point of view of SEO

content and backlinks will win the day.

If you are keen on EDM (exact domain match) remember to consider alternative Tld's who will often have the keyword you need

    .EU (European Union)
.IM (isle of man, great for branding IM related products or services)
    .LU (luxemburg)
    .CO (Columbia) (gaining in popularity)
.CM (Cameroon , a bit expensive but can get some typo traffic)
.SO (Somalia, new Tld, lots of promotions from registrars, lots of keywords available)

I do my research with eurodns.com but don't always buy from them as they can be expensive.

Best of success in your domain buying.

It doesn't make big difference, as these three extensions are more popular. But your real work in building your site traffic and its ranking doesn't affect domain extensions.
You can choose any extension, but choosing among these three reflects professionalism.

My advice is stick to these 3 extensions, unless you are blanked out with other good domain names for our niche.

When I was making good money with lots of AdSense sites, I didn't notice any differences between com/org/net. However, .info and other ones were no where ranked near top 3 pages.

Sorry to sidetrack the thread, but would it be rude and intrusive if I were to ask why you're no longer earning good money with AdSense sites, misterkailo? Did you sell up and get out of that business, or did Google slam the hammer down on your sites/account?

(Feel free to tell me to beggar off if you wish - I'm not one to easily take offense! )
